Weight Loss Questions

Wednesday March 17, 2004
Losing weight can be a frustrating business, if your emails are any indication. The most frequent question I get is--why haven't I lost any weight yet? Clearly, you people have a problem with patience. That's okay, I do too...which is why I wrote this article. If you're frustrated with your progress, Weight Loss Dilemmas will help answer your questions and keep you focused on what's important...your health.

(1) Kati says:

im not bothered about my weight or my mesurments. its my body shape. mostly my tummy, inner thighs, and my “love handles” im a teen, so i know my body is changing, but im an older teen and i dont have hips, i more have “concave” hips, no matter how loose i buy my pants, from a back view ubove my pants is wider than below them. im also a taller girl. il 5′10 1/2 and i weight 155, once again i dont mind the #, just my shape. im also very athlectic. so i end up eating alot after practice but i burn that off easly. i’ve tried running more, that just made parts of me that are fine to get skinnier (like under my ribcage) and added muscle. What can i do to change my figure, that wont take very long

(2) Patia says:

I’m 17 and six foot tall..I weigh about 157 to 160…I feel overweight. I look healthy but I see my flaws. I have HUGE love handles, wide hips, and my rib cage sticks out so far. I can’t wear certain types of clothes because of my mid section. Im very athletic. I play softball, cheerleading, and basketball. My boyfriend tells me all the time how beautiful I am and how I’m perfect but I feel so ugly. I just wish I was small and petite. A lot of people make fun of me, because they say that my body resembles a man. How can I lose the body fat in my legs and stomach? How can I make my body look more femine?!

(3) VAL says:

I have started to diet and exercize. I know that you need to do both. I am wondering if sitting in a suana or steam room burns calories? If so what is the break down for the time spent in there?

(4) Paige says:

A sauna or steam room is definitely not a great way to lose weight. Any weight you lose is water and will be replaced as soon as you replace fluids.

(5) Michelle says:

Hello,

I’ve been doing a cardio aerobic exercise for almost a year now in hopes of trimming my legs. I work out 4 times a week minimum and always focus the attention on my legs. Over the past couple of months I’ve noticed that I’ve had to keep moving up in pant sizes. It frustrated me to push myself harder while working out. I realized finally that my legs were getting bigger because I was building muscle!! I want to trim down my legs, not make them bigger. What can I do to reverse this effect and what is a good exercise for getting smaller legs?? Help!

(6) meaghan says:

I’ve been exercising, riding a stationary bike, walking, the Bean, for more than four months. My calorie intake is about 1800-2000 per day. I weigh 200 lbs. I have lost NOTHING , no weight, no inches, nothing. I was about 120 before I became pregnant, but gained 35-40 lbs with two pregnancies, lost it right after each, but gained it back within a year. the only thing that has worked to take off the weight has been a liquid diet. Of course, once I start eating solids I gain it all back. what do I do?

(8) Hazel says:

I am having issues. I am 5 feet 2 and was 144 pounds. Very athletic and sort of muscular. On May 1st I joined a gym and started working out 4 days a week. I have always worked out at home but I needed something a little different. The gym have these classes called rep Reebok that includes weights with aerobic classes. I have developed muscle that I can see and have lost inches. However I weigh 147 pounds and I cant understand that. I eat very healthy and not much just average. What is up with the weight gain?

(12) Brandy says:

Im 18 years old, 5″5′ and weigh about 170 lbs. By looking at the weight height ratio chart I am overweight, but I dont feel it.I’m active in sports, lift weights and do a lot of walking. Aside from that I have quite a large bust and wide hips, pretty much an hourglass figure. Am I overwieght? I realize that my figure was kind of an inherited gene, and I’ve tried diets and excercise but all i seem to do is gain more muscle! Its frustrating to me to see very tiny girls who dont work out at all, but at the same time I love my figure compared to having the body of a twelve year old. What should I do?

(14) Hinata says:

Hi I have a wierd question.
I work out for 1.5 to 2 hours on the elliptical and stair master every other day. I’ve been improving the way I eat by not only lowering the daily calorie intake, but making better choices of what I eat. The thing is, I noticed I have been losing weight in my face. My triple chin has turned into a double chin that you can only see through certain angles (it used to be VERY apparent before), and I’ve lost alot of weight in my neck and shoulders.

HERE’S THE KICKER: Before I used to be very proportional. Very hourglass. I was very top heavy (big breasts and said apparent double chin) and then a slightly tighter waist (35 inches, used to be 38 inches) and hips were slightly slimmer than bust.
I’ve lost alot more weight in my face area, neck and shoulders, but now my waist and sides have thickened several inches. My hips have also gotten slightly larger.

My family has noticed this and said that it’s extremely odd that I lose weight from bust up. But from my bust down my measurements have gone up 1 to 2 inches. I’m guessing that since I do alot of leg exercises and cardio, is my weight possible shifting down? I’ve looked all over the internet and have seen nothing about weight lowering down your body as you burn it. Is this normal or am I doing the wrong exercises?

(16) Angela says:

When trying to lose weight you usually will lose the first ‘chunk’ fast and then after that is done it will take a little more effort on your part to lose more weight. Try making changes to your diet and excersize plan but make slight changes nothing too drastic. This will hopefully help you step it up.

Please help Micka. I agonize for her. I am 61 and joined the YMCA in January. I weighed 204 then. 3 months later I weigh 200. Not a big loss, but if I keep doing what I’m doing, and live long enough , LOL, I will reach 165– my goal. The YMCA has financial aid available for ANYone, but especially children. It can help Micka with a personal fitness assesment and weightloss plan designed just for her.

(27) Sophie :) says:

I’m a 21 year old girl at 5″2. My weight is currently 9 stone and 10lbs.

I started dieting this time last year when I stepped on the scales and saw that I had made it to 11 stones!.. I have been on and off dieting since and since I reached 9 stone have not allowed my self to go over 10 stones after that (so I’ve gone between 9 and 10 stones).

a few weeks ago I reached 9″2 again.. so carried on dieting (eating between 400 and 1000 cals a day) and burning about an average of 700 cals a day at the gym, hoping that I would carry on losing at about 4 lbs per week.. However, my weight loss stalled!.. I actually gained a lb!.. (granted I didn’t go to the gym again that week but still walked alot and certainly dieted)..

I gave up and started eating again.. like crazy!.. now i’m as i said 9″10.. i’ve got 35 days till a big event and would like to lose weight so i’m nicely in the 8 stone range?.. how would anyone suggest i do it without reaching a weight loss plateau this time?.. are there any experts who could guide me?.. i don’t mind only losing about a lb a week after the 35 days as i’ll have the time and patience then.. Any advice??…

loves Sophie xxx
