Meditation in Motion

It feels like we're in a time of change right now. Summer is over and the weather is changing. Our schedules change as kids go back to school and we get back to long hours at work. Whether it's the season or events in our lives, change can leave us feeling overwhelmed and uncertain. Instead of letting these changes make you crazy, why not take a moment to step back and let it all sink in?

One way to calm your mind and soothe your body is with exercise or, more specifically, moving meditation. The idea behind moving meditation is that when you move your body in rhythmic ways, you free your mind, focus your thinking and sort through whatever stresses you might be experiencing.

Any kind of movement will do! If you have trouble sitting still, you might try Yoga, Walking, Running, or other types of Exercise. The idea is to:

  • Slow down. Take your time and focus on what you're doing...the movement of your feet as you walk, the rhythm of your breathing as you stretch or the sound of the wind in the trees.
  • Breathe. Take long, slow deep breaths feeling your body relax with each inhale and exhale....Read more
  • Leave your expectations at home. Many people feel guilty if they take time for something too 'easy.' Remember, this is for your mind, not just your body. Give yourself permission to do something gentle.
