Should You Exercise With a Cold?

Tuesday March 7, 2006
Oh no! Suzanne has a cold and her workout plans are out the window. I don't have to tell you that winter colds suck, especially the ones you get towards the end of the season with the changing temperatures and last-minute snowstorms. So, what do you do when you have a cold? Do you go ahead with your workout or rest?

As I explain in my article, Getting Through an Injury or Illness, it's really up to you (and your doctor, if you've seen him/her). In general, a workout probably wouldn't kill you if you have a head cold (though it might not be the most pleasant workout in the world). But, if you have upper-respiratory problems and/or a fever, you definitely want to take it easy. You might find this is a great time for something gentle like yoga or stretching.

Whatever you do, take a page from Suzanne's book and skip the gym if you're contagious. Us gym members thank you!
