Do you BOSU? Try this Total Body Strength on the BOSU Balance Trainer

Thursday May 11, 2006
If you haven't heard of the BOSU Balance Trainer, here's what it is: It's sort of like a ball that's been sliced in half and slapped onto a hard, flat platform. You can use the squishy dome-side to do everything from cardio (think stepping, jumping, etc.), strength training (use it like a weight bench) and some very intense core work as well. You can also use the platform side for a variety of moves, my favorite being the Plank with a Tilt.

While the BOSU Balance Trainer has been around for awhile, it's still catching on, mainly because people aren't sure exactly how to use it. While there are some great BOSU videos out there, I have a basic BOSU Balance Trainer Workout and, even better, a brand new Total Body Strength Workout that has some advanced moves targeting the entire body in one dynamic workout.

If you're looking for some new moves to try on your BOSU, check it out and let me know what you think about it. Enjoy!

This is actually an excellent work out. My trainer uses it with me to strengthen my core. High impact and low impact aerobic classes that us the BOSU are great to get familiar with balancing. I’ll admit, I had to learn to train my ankles as well. But the results you’ll get are amazing. I highly recommend it.

Hi, Lori. I think you’ll really enjoy it. Be sure to check out the BOSU videos available - they’re great for learning how to use your BOSU. I’ll be posting new workouts in the future, so you’ll have that resource as well. Enjoy!

To me, the BOSU seems like a good predecessor to the SWISS balance ball. Since one side is flat, with either flat side up or down, there is versatility in experimenting with balance.

Like yoga, just because you graduate to swiss doesn’t mean you give up BOSU. No, of course not. Using movements that engage stabilizers are great, but doing moves where you don’t have to are good too, because you can use more weight. Just because I can do an overhead squat doesn’t mean I stop normal squats, because I can squat a lot more. Just because I can do swiss-ball pushups doesn’t mean I’ll stop normal ones, because I can’t do a swiss ball pushup with 50lbs on my back like I can a pushup.
