Get Started with Running

Friday June 2, 2006
About 15 years ago, I decided I wanted to start running. My older sister was a runner and she went out every day for at least an hour and she would come home looking healthy, happy and, most importantly, skinny. Thinking I'd get the same benefits, I laced up my shoes one day and started out at a healthy clip. About 10 minutes later, I was asking myself what kind of crazy person would do this to themselves? The burning lungs...the side stitch...the shin splints...it was miserable!

What I didn't know then was that, just because I walked and did aerobics didn't mean I would just be able to go out and run for an hour my first time out. What I needed was to take my time and ease into it and, once I did that, I realized that running wasn't as awful as I thought it was.

Not everyone is going to enjoy running but, if you're looking for an activity that's a bit more challenging than walking and just as accessible, running is a great choice. Before you head out for your first run, though, make sure you have the right shoes and the right goals for your fitness level. The following resources should help you out...happy running!
