Exercise and Menopause

Friday June 9, 2006
"I'm flashing!" This is what one of my clients shouts whenever she's having a hot flash...a cue for us to stop working out so she can run upstairs and stick her head in the refrigerator. Hey, running up the stairs counts for exercise, right? As my client put it, hot flashes "really suck" and are one of the more annoying symptoms some women may experience as they go through menopause.

While there are a number of things you can do to manage and minimize hot flashes, there's one thing that may help: exercise. While scientists are still studying how exercise effects hot flashes, some previous studies have shown that exercise may reduce the frequency of hot flashes. It can also help alleviate some of the other symptoms like mood shifts, anxiety and depression. If you're not exercising, it's time to get started.
