Vote in This Week's Poll: What's the main reason you exercise?

Friday July 28, 2006
Whenever I train a new client, they almost always ask me about my own workout program, saying something like "you probably workout for hours every day," with an accompanying look of disgust. When I tell them I try to do something everyday, but that my exercise program is pretty reasonable, their next question is, "why is it so easy for you to exercise, but so hard for me?"

That's often the crucial question to answer when you're struggling to start an exercise program. Why do you need to exercise? Finding the answer is one way to make exercise easier - we all need a reasons to do what we do and, for many of us regular exercisers, those reasons change depending on our goals and what's going on in our lives.

What about you? Tell us why you exercise in this week's poll and maybe you'll inspire someone else to get moving. If you're one of those people who has trouble sticking with exercise, check out the most common reasons why you don't exercise.

Poll: What's the main reason you exercise?

1. To lose weight or manage my weight
2. To build muscle/get stronger
3. To feel better and improve my health
4. To train for a sport or race
5. To manage an illness or medical condition
6. Other - please explain in comments

(1) Angela says:

Really, it’s 2 and 3 for me. I marked number three though because that means the most to me. I also do it to lose inches, not weight.

(2) Em says:

All the reasons given are valid for me. But mostly I exercise because I enjoy it. I like to sweat, feel I can run forever, beat my boyfriend in tennis, go to bed tired with sore muscles, carry all my gear when hiking, pass stationary traffic on my bike, etc etc. It just makes me feel good. Everything else is a bonus.

(5) Rossome says:

I will agree with Em. I exercise because I need to be challenged physically and push my limits. I enjoy being super fast with great stamina and a good body. I like to feel hurt and sore after workouts and then move onto my usual daily life. I also take some joy in the fact that I do things that pretty much no one else does.

(7) Robert says:

I’ve always found that exercising doesn’t have to be a pain in the rear.
If I find something I enjoy doing for
exercise, I’ll stay with it and reach
my fitness goals and lose weight.

(9) Leigh says:

My choices are 1, 2, 3, & 5 as well as to improve my mood, alleviate depression and develop a social network.
After my DH death last year I realized that I had become isolated from people and going to the gym has helped to change that.
