Exercise of the Week - One-Armed Tricep Pushup

Tuesday November 7, 2006
Working the triceps can get a little boring since most tricep exercises involve extending the arms in some way, such as in kickbacks or seated extensions. If you're looking for something new and challenging, this tricep pushup is a good choice. This exercise is simple and the movement is very small, but the challenge is a much bigger than you might think.

Do it right: Lie on your right side with the knees bent and the hips stacked. Wrap the right arm around the waist and place the left hand on the floor in front of you. Contract the triceps to push the body up and off the floor, straightening the left arm as much as you can. Lower a few inches and continue pushing up and down for 8-12 reps before switching sides.

Add this move to your usual upper body workout or check out this Challenging Upper Body Workout for more ideas.

I don’t understand ’straighten as much as you can’.

Everyone should be able to totally straighten their arm.

Straightening makes you stronger, lets the bone take the weight instead of the muscle. It’s not the hard part, the hard part is going down.

It should say ‘go as deep as you can’.
