Exercise of the Week - Horizontal Woodchops for Abs

Monday November 27, 2006
You've probably seen some type of woodchop before, usually a diagonal movement that engages every part of the abs and back. I really like this horizontal version because it gives you a lot of control and is especially great training for sports that involve a lot of rotation. The tension of the band is key to making this move work, so I would recommend a medium or even a heavy strength tube here. Make sure you don't tweak the knees as you turn and avoid this move if you have back problems.

Do it right:Wrap a resistance band or tube around a sturdy object a bit higher than waist high and stand sideways to it. Hold the handles in both hands and keep the arms straight (elbows not locked) and swing the arms across the body and rotate towards the left, contracting the abs. Return to start and repeat for 10-12 reps before switching sides.
