Vote in This Week's Poll: How do you monitor the intensity of your workouts?

Monday May 14, 2007
I'm a big fan of using heart rate monitors to keep track of how hard you're working during exercise. For me, my workouts improved when I started using a heart rate monitor because I realized that, much of the time, I was actually working too hard. Some people find heart rate monitors motivating while others think they make you a little too anal about your workouts...I can agree with that too, seeing as how being anal-retentive is something I can be good at under the right circumstances.

But, a heart rate monitor isn't the only way to monitor intensity. In fact, many people find that just paying attention to how they feel during exercise is the easiest way to decide whether they need to slow down or speed up. What about you? Are you into the heart rate thing or do you prefer a simpler method? Or perhaps you don't worry about how hard you're working at all? Either way, vote in this week's poll and tell us how, or if, you monitor your exercise intensity.

Poll: How do you monitor the intensity of your workouts?

1. A heart rate monitor
2. Perceived exertion scale or how hard it feels
3. The talk test
4. A combination of the above
5. I don't monitor my intensity
6. Other - please explain in comments

I am a runner, and I use a GPS watch to track my pace. My pace and distance determines the intensity of my work out. It also tracks elevation and tells me the wind speed on a given day. It has really enhanced my runs, and motviates me to push harder.
