Exercise of the Week - Row on One Leg

Tuesday May 15, 2007
I've been exercising for a long time now and find that strength training gets pretty boring when you do the same thing all the time. I'm always looking for new ways to add challenge and interest to the usual exercises and, if you're looking for ideas as well, one simple change you can make is with your stance and positioning. In this example, I've taken a traditional dumbbell row and changed it into a one-legged exercise...a small change, but one that makes this move much harder than before.

What's nice about the one-legged row is that you work on balance and stability while also working your back muscles and your lower body. Remember...the more muscle groups you involve, the more functional the move is and the more calories you burn. When trying this move, take care and try holding onto a chair for balance the first time around. If you're like me, you'll find the balance challenge to be very tough and you do want to keep good form during the dumbbell row. Your hamstring flexibility will also play a role here, so you may need to bend the standing knee or lower the lifted leg rather than keeping it parallel to the floor.

Do it right: Hold a medium-heavy dumbbell in the left hand and tip forward from the hips, keeping back flat and stomach tight. Lift the right leg straight up behind you until it's parallel to the floor and bend the elbow, pulling it towards the ribcage in a rowing motion. Keep the leg lifted as you lift and lower the arm for 1-3 sets of 10-16 reps. Switch sides.

Sit-ups won’t help, “sort of”. You can’t remove fat in certain “spots” of the body. Doing sit-ups may actually increase your pooch, in that the muscles underneath the layer of belly fat will increase in size. Much like that of a bicep if you do arm curls. The only way to remove fat from the body is to burn more calories than you take in. The sit-ups will help with overall calorie burn, but just hitting that one area aint gonna cut it. Sorry. Good luck though. The important thing is to have a goal and get the education to help you achieve it, so you are well on your way!!

for strong abs - lie on the floor knees bent - breathe in, then raise your head off of the floor & hold for the count of twenty - repeat 3 sets! gentle but effective - it works for me.

I also wanted to get my tommy flat. I spoke to doctor about things that could help. I don’t have a lot of time to exercise. She told me to “detox” my body. I went on a three day Juice Fast (it has to be three days that you know you will not be leaving the house.) It worked for me. That with doing 25 cruches before bed time.

When you work out you should consider body type and age. Like I found out because my body is an hour glass shape, I disrupt fat evenly thought out my whole body. If this is also your frame you have to “burn” all the fat off first THEN tone. To do this you want to stick to lower impact cardio exercises. High impact will help you burn calories to but it also builds muscle at the same time. Again this would be defeating the purpose of trying to look smaller. Every body shape has a work out type that fits best for their frame. I hope that About.com has information on it. Good Luck

That should be left up to your wife on weather or not she wants to flaten her tummy. I’m sure that she can learn many things from this web site, when she’s ready.

(15) Lily says:

the more things change, the more they stay the same. With all these gimmicks and gadgets available out there, all with a cost. The old fashioned push-ups, pull-ups and sit-ups and counting calories, it still works. But, it is work.

(18) Mellie says:

I find diet a big factor - protein to carb ratio and drinking lots of water. I actually found belly dancing a fun way to tone and burn off calories. Kegels (Pelvic floor) are great for the stubborn lower abdomen.
