The Truth about Fad Diets

Friday June 1, 2007
If you've spent any time at my site, you may know that I'm not a fan of diets, whether they're mainstream or on the fringes. I've never met a person who was able to stay on any diet for longer than a few weeks or months and that always spells trouble. As soon as you go off whatever diet you're following, the weight comes back. That isn't to say that diets are inherently bad...many of them offer great ideas for how to eat and recipes to try and some people really can follow them on a long-term basis. But, for most of us, diets just don't fit very well in the real world.

So, if you don't follow a diet then what should you do? It may seem like dieting is the only way to change your eating habits but there really is a better way. Experts find that people who make small changes over time are much more successful at permanently changing the way they eat. This approach isn't all the popular because, unlike going on a diet, you won't see a major change in your weight right away. But, the upside of that is that the changes you do make are permanent and the weight that comes off stays off. Can't beat that with a stick.

If you can find the patience to make those gradual changes, you really will see results. If you need more motivation or inspiration, check out these great resources about diets from our Health & Fitness Guides:

I know all diets do not always work. I was 250 lbs and tried the South Beach Plan. I dropped 35 lbs and have gained back 2 lbs. I havae returned to eating all befor and still keeping off the weight. I find that if I tend to go up 5 or so lbs, I go basck on the diets initial phase and in a week I do drop back down. I reommend it and would like your opinion.

I think fad diets are ultimately dangerous and unfortunately most people in our society want immediate results from everything, including diets so it is no wonder obesity is such a problem. I think the only way to really lose weight is to eat less and find an exercise routine that suits you best to burn fat and calories, something you can do everyday not just once in a great while when guilt piles on. Taking it slow and lowering expectations to about a pound a week is the best way. It worked for me and continues to keep me around 10 pounds for my ideal weight. My sister did fad diets for years and years and lost and gained and lost and gained and now she is paying the price of bone loss and other health problems and by the way is still too heavy in her own opinion. I also think for me I had to learn to accept myself with the body I have and not expect it to look like something I see in a magazine or on TV.

The word diet in it self is a four letter word! I eat small meals 6-7 per day, every 2.5 to 3 hours. The benefit of this simple routine, keeps your insulin levels steady and speeds up your metabolism. It’s essential for people to take a multivitamin with minerals and omega 3-6-9 oils, because it helps with the breakdown of fats in your body. We do not have enough nutrients in our foods today, do to shelf life demand from the consumer. Most Americans are walking around vitamin depleted, causing greater weight gain and more immune disorders. Exercise…Cardio/weights 4-5 days a week, drink plenty of water to wash out your fat stores. Always get at least 7-9 hours a sleep at night, rest is an important time for your body to heal itself, reboost the immune system and cleanse for the next day. I recommend The Body Sculpting Bible for Men and for Women, to get proper training and start loving your life.
