What's Your Favorite Workout Song?
Friday June 22, 2007
One thing I've noticed about working out on cardio machines is that they can be very, very boring. Music is one thing that gets me through and I like to put my favorite workout songs about halfway through my routine to give me that extra kick I need to keep going.
I really love this topic because I've gotten some great ideas for songs to add to my workout playlists. I tend to get obsessed with songs, listen to them until I can't stand them anymore, then feel bereft when I don't have another great song to take it's place. So help me out by telling me all about your favorite exercise songs...rock, pop, alternative, country or even your favorite audiobooks to listen to. Leave them here in comments so we can update our playlists with the best songs to workout to.

Comments
My favorite album right now is Gwen Stefani’s Love.Angel.Music.Baby. It’s great music for running and walking.
any song by Corrosion of Conformity
I like 80’s music when i workout.
Cyndi Lauper, Madonna, Taylor Dayne.
and i especially love listening to the Night at the Roxbury Soundtrack, that always gets me pumped.
I have the same problem. I listen to a playlist until I hear it in my sleep and then I am less inclined to work out, since I’m bored with the music. Here are some good songs that I’ve worn out…
I Feel Lucky – Mary Chapin Carpenter
The Bug – Mary Chapin Carpenter
Passionate Kisses – Mary Chapin Carpenter
I Take My Chances – Mary Chapin Carpenter
Long Time Gone – Dixie Chicks
Landslide – Dixie Chicks
The WALK the LINE soundtrack
The SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS
When i workout I love listening to Freestyle.
TKA, CoverGirls, George Lamond,Judy Torres, Corinna, Sasha and many more.
I love listening to Journey when i workout…especially for running. “Don’t Stop Believing” is especially good as well as all of the stupid songs on the Rocky soundtrack. “Eye of the Tiger”, “Survivor” etc.
I listen to (and “sing” along with when I can) military cadences. The steady beat and fear of the drill instructor keep me moving. My first day using them instead of music I made it through a 3 mile run without wanting to stop, when I normally wimp out in the first mile or so.
Thanks everyone for posting your ideas…keep ‘em coming. These are great!
Like many of you I am guilty of the play it to my ears bleed use of my playlists. There are, however, some that seem to either make it on to every play list, or make frequent appearances. Some may sound a little obscure, but give ‘em a try, they may suprise you. They are:
1. Galaxy Bounce – Chemical Brothers
2. Get a Move On – Mr. Scruff (featured in Lincoln commercials – that jazzy little riff? GREAT treadmill song)
3. One girl revolution – Superchic
4. Rendez’Vu – Basement Jaxx (great beat)
5. Do Your Thing – Basement Jaxx (will definately get you going)
6. Steam – Peter Gabriel
7. Groove is in the heart – Deelight
8. Shambala – Three dog night
9. A change would do you good – Sheryl Crow
10. New Sensation – INXS
11. Let ‘er Rip – the Dixie Chicks
12. Fools Paradise – Oingo Boingo
13. One Girl Revolution – Superchic
14. Ready to Go – Republica
15. Wild Wild West – Will Smith
16. Switch – Will Smith
17. Sunrise – Duran Duran (Jason Nevins remix is esp. good)
18. All Star – Smashmouth
19. The Sun – Maroon 5
20. You Can CanCan – Moulon Rouge Soundtrack
Hope that gives some ideas for variety. Try some of the more obscure ones, you may be glad ya did! Happy Work out!
Whip It by Devo
The #1 workout song is
Eye of the Tiger. OMG how can anyone listen to those songs. This truley inspires u to run, lift, or even just doing pushups in the morning. C’mon we all know Rocky looks tough y cant u??
The best workout song(s)… without a doubt anything off of “…And Justice For All” by Metallica.
I’m a soundtrack person – the Legally Blonde soundtrack has some great tunes – One Girl Revolution (Superchic), Watch Me Shine (Joanna Pacitti), Sex Machine (Mya). And as always the soundtracks to The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, and Too Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything Julie Newmar!
If its sound tracks you like, check out the Mummy OST, or any Danny Elfman, esp. Big Fish. They make great background music when you want to loose yourself.
Dragula by Rob Zombie is my favorite. Anything by Shotgun Messiah is good and Megadeth will get you going pretty good too.
I love “Get Right” by J.Lo. The beat is great for a good cardio workout.
Pump it by the Black Eyed Peas.
I first heard it in my hip-hop class and it’s been a permanent fixture in my mp3 player for working out ever since.
Pump up the Jam cd , Technotronic
Love Shack cd, B52’s
Whenever I need a little kick, I turn on AC/Dc as loud as my ipod will go. It works everytime.
ac/dc will definetly put a kick in your work out. Most of the older van halen until that sammy guy put his 2 cents in.But my new work out band is disturbed they really jam.
I thing a good dose of disturbed or godsmack gets the blood pumping and makes the time fly by.
I love listening to pop in Spanish when I work out — it’s not my native language, so trying to translate the words keeps my mind occupied. Juanes in particular is great for working out.
Prince’s “You sexy motherf***er” is a most excellent tune that gets me going!
Also, they are obscure, but a little band out of New Orleans called the Morning 40 Federation is great for rollerblading!
Give “Pain lies on the riverside” by Live a try.
D.A.R.E. by the Gorillaz!
Does anyone know the name of the song they use in the really upbeat cell phone commercial? The girl is ‘dancing’ to her music, takes a call, then goes right back to her music. I would love to add that song to my collection of workout songs.
My fave workout songs are “No Surprise” by Theory of a Deadman, “Criminal” by Fiona Apple, “Lady Marmalade” from the Moulin Rouge soundtrack, “Love Rollercoaster” and “Higher Ground” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and “Take Me Out” by Franz Ferdinand.
I love Oakenfold for working out… my current favorite is “Hypnotized.”
michael jackson does it for me. as long you doing attempt moonwalking in the gym. this earns you some funny looks.
life less frightening – Rise Against
nelly fortatdo/ man eater- Great for running.Good pace in the beat. Also Fergy / London Bridges.
nelly-heart of a champion…Great Motivational song
For me I like AC/DC, Slipknot, Taking Back Sunday, some Atreyu (”Ex’s and Oh’s”, “We Stand Up”, “My Fork In the Road”), blink-182, Sublime, Three Days Grace, etc.
I work at a gym!!! All I have to say is that it depends on the mood!! You can use a little classic rock like:
It Hurts So Good!John Cougar Mellencamp
Magic Carpet Ride!Steppenwolf
Cocaine!Eric Clapton
Black Betty!Ram Jam
Welcome To The Jungle! GnR
or you can go for some harder rock like:
Killing In The Name Of! Rage Against The Machine
I Stand Alone- Godsmack
Twisted Transistor! Korn
Coming Undone!Korn
Only!Nine Inch Nails
or if you like just feel like a little hip hop/rap/r&b like:
Pump It! BEP
Baby Got Back! Sir Mix Alot
What You Waiting For! Gwen Stefani
Wheres Your Head At!
Smack My Bitch Up! Prodigy
Headsprung! LL Cool J
Missy Elliott!
or you are in the mood for a little country like:
Hey Good Looking! Jimmy Buffet

Two Pina Coladas! Jimmy Buffet
Sold! John Michael Montgomery
There is alot of good country out there!
So there are some ideas! Just stay motivated and change the music to suit your mood and that will help alot!

Black Eyed Peas – My Humps
Fergie – Fergilicious
I found the Jock jams work wonders… they just keep you wanting to be moving!
Megadeth’s “Blood of Heroes”
Oh yeah, and a new one – Bang Camaro’s “Push Push”. It’s got a very “Eye of the Tiger” sound to it.
When working out, and especially cardio, I love listening to either rock, or hip-hop. It definitely motivates me more than anything else.
As weird as it sounds, listening to rap/hip-hop songs that talk about girls having hot bodies, it makes me feel confident and makes me work harder.

when I exercise I like upbeat music, so I have some of Britney Spears’ older music in there, such and I’m a slave 4 u. I listen to Destiny’s child’s older music they have really good beats, though it’s a little embarrasing when people start flipping through my music. Oh, well, whatever keeps you motivated.

Get low- Flo rida ft. t-pain
u can’t touch this- mc hammer

I can remember visiting a friend back around 1992 or ‘93, and he was lifting weights while lifting to “I’m gonna knock you out” by LL Cool J. I always thought that was a good one. Also, “Through the Fire and Flames” by Dragonforce for the mid-workout heavy-hitting session. As a child of the 80’s, I’m for any steady-paced song (i.e. “My Girl” by Chilliwack) for a warm-up or cool down.
Other than that, here’s a wacky suggestion: remember “Hooked on Classics?” Time-tested melodies with a disco beat…how can ya go wrong?
I’d say most of the SlipKnoT and KoRn songs would be great if you like it…
“Paralyzer” by Finger Eleven is the best! You don’t even feel like you’re working out!
I’ve got to say thank you to all previous posts! I got some really great music ideas and can’t wait to get to the gym….with all the songs I have on my pod, I’m gonna have to workout at least two days straight!! LOL!

Anything from the Rocky soundtracks

I HAVE A GYM PLAYLIST IN MY iPod OF 250 SONGS, SO IF I LISTEN TO 30 SONGS PER WORKOUT, THAT’S OVER A WEEK WITH NO REPEATS. IT WORKS OUT NICELY. I HAVE A REALLY ECLECTIC MIX OF UPBEAT SONGS – FROM METALLICA TO GARTH BROOKS, EMINEM TO THE BEATLES, NSYNC TO BON JOVI AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN. IT REALLY KEEPS ME INTERESTED AND MOTIVATED.
I have a few different playlists that I use but right now I have Christina Aguilera’s “Fighter” on all of them toward the end just before I get ready for a cool down. It gives me that extra push I need to finish strong.
Hey does anyone one know the name of this song?
It starts out with a chorus of woo-hos and then a woman singer starts singing
HI DAVID,
THE SONG YOU’RE LOOKING FOR IS “BLACK HORSE AND THE CHERRY TREE” BY KT TUNSTALL. DO I WIN SOME SORT OF PRIZE?
Petey Pablo – show me the money.
absolute best one i’ve ever used. i think i lost five pounds cause of this. lol.
@ David…possibly Gwen Stefani ft. Akon – The sweet escape?
Linkin Park and Jay Z – Numb/Encore is one of mine

I know by now that your eyebrow is probably raised pretty high, but trust me, don’t knock it until you try it. I have a few more ingredients in my personal pump mix, but no magician gives away all of his tricks. This should be a good base for anyone looking for a good workout mix.
I`m a big fan of anything with a beat! try some ministry of sound albums or similar.
Also rob zombie, rammstein and particularly andrew w.k never fail to keep me goin that extra couple o mile
girls just wanna have fun by Cyndi Lauper is my favorite
“You’re the Best” by Joe Esposito is a kick ass song to work out to, especially if you’re an ’80s child.
Motorhead – Ace of Spades
Motorhead – Time to Play the Game

I get some great music for free on the Podcast section of i-tunes. DJ Gamblore has some hour long pods of great running beat tunes. Also “Podrunner” is another great podcast with the beats per minute listed so you can choose the right speed.
If you are feeling spiritual the “Daily Audio Bible” and the “Daily Audio Proverb” are inspiring by Brian Hardin.

Can’t believe no one has said that yet!
The best work out song would have to be Sandstorm by Darude it has the best beats
believe it or not i like that song “Be like Mike” from the old nike commercials….. I get pumped when listening to it
I like to listen to mash ups when I work out. They are usually upbeat and the mixing of songs that are familiar is fun and distracting. The best IMHO is the two Girl Talk cds, Night Ripper and Feed the Animals. I have put in hundreds of hours doing cardio and strength training to those two albums. Also I like the Podrunner podcast (free!). I download it from the the itunes store. 1 hour of upbeat mixing work out music set at different bpm. Not always great but you can’t beat free!
I really like: “Footloose”, “My Life”- Billy Joel Journey “I Love a Rainy Night”- Eddie Rabbit The Pointer Sisters Donna Summers Selena
Bat out of Hell – Meat Loaf. That gets the juices pumping.
I love to walk to Jive Bunny and the Mixmasters. It’s got some great stuff from several decades and is upbeat and fun.
Doobie Brothers songs!
I workout like a storm to “ROCK YOU LIKE A HURRICANE”by the Scorpions. Just in cast you don’t know them they’re the best Heavy Metal band ever, and they are from Germany.
I have been putting together a playlist of songs with perfect tempos to walk my dog. (He’s a German Shorthair Pointer and Springer Spaniel mix. This fact may help explain my choises.) So far, I have:
Gimme Shelter-Rolling Stones
Blood and Roses-Smithereens
Because the Night-Patti Smith
Bound for the Floor-Local H
Enemy-Days of the New
This is only the beginning. D’Ogie and I are still working on it!
The song is so negative, but the beat is slamming and the side is long playing: “Victim” by Candi Staton
Old school, but a fast, excellent side to walk to: “(Love taught me who was)The Boss” by Diana Ross
My cool down is always “Ectasy” by Barry White, certainly worth waking up early for. The percussion works for my slow walk home.
Huey Lewis & The News – Heart of Rock and Roll
ZERO HOUR,SYMPHONY X,POWER OF OMENS,DEATH, CHILDREN OF BODOM PLUS MOVIE SCORES LORD OF THE RINGS,HELLRAISER,SAINT SINNER,SLEEPY HOLLOW AND MORE!!!!!!!!!
I listen to Earth,Wind, and Fire’s “Greatest Hits”/ Bobby Womack’s “Sweet Caroline” and “Fire and Rain”/Gladys Knight’s “Love Overboard”/India Arie’s “I am not my hair”/Jimi Hendrix “All Along the Watchtower” and “The Wind Cries Mary”
Daddy yankee and fergie (impacto)
Daddy yankee (pose)
I like to workout with some great club/house music. http://www.djcurtgilmore.podomatic.com/
I go along with the military cadences idea. I don’t run, but I walk. Walking to Mexican marches keeps me energized during my walk and keeps me at a good pace. I just pretend I’m in a great parade and need to keep up with the band. It works for me!
Girl Can’t Help It Steve Perry/Journey
Be Good to Yourself Steve Perry/Journey
Get Over It Don Henley
Don’t Fight It Steve Perry/Kenny Loggins
Hold The Line Toto
Hold On Eagles

“Addicted to Love” by Robert Palmer
I am a 45 year old male who works out 5 or 6 days a week. I weight train, do cardio, and practice traditional Japanese Martial Arts. I have been told that my MP3 player has the wildest playlist, but I like it! I listen to old school rap (such as Tupac, Dr. Dre) new rap (like Rick Ross, Lil’ Wayne, Akon) 90’s alternative (Nirvana, Bush) new Metal (Disturbed, Mudvayne) and REALLY new rock (Scars on Broadway, Five Finger Death Punch, Ladytron.) I guess it all depends on the mood I’m in; I have a lot of accoustic versions of hard rock songs as well as (blush!) pop acts like Britany Spears, Shakira, Fergie and Paramore. In my opinion, angry, driving rock works best for weight training, while thumping, socially relevant rap is great for hitting the heavy bag and kata (NOT the ‘booty shakin’ stuff though.)
I drive my wife and kids crazy, and they are very thankful for earphones.
If you are in the mood for a jog, try The Runner from Manfred Mann. You will feel like an Olympian in the Marathon, and will dig down deep for all you’ve got.
All These Thing That I Have Done by The Killers
Approaching 40, slowly and reluctantly. Working out 6 days a week at the neighborhood Bally’s. I’ve been an afficianado of electronica since my early teens, and the Trance and Psy/Goa Trance genres work really well both for cardio training and strength training. My iPod playlist favorites: Lambda Core, Sean Tyas, Ronski Speed, Nitrous Oxide, Orkidea, John O’Callaghan, Signalrunners, enMass, Ferry Corsten, Hydroid … etc. The list goes on. And on.
“Shut Me Up” by Mindless Self Indulgence
Marches work for me on the Treadmill. Almost too well, in fact. When Garyowens comes on, the Cadence has me bouncing and my Heart Rate goes up right where it should be! But I have to remove my headphones occasionally so that I can go a little slower!!!
I use Alias “Waiting for Love” (look it up on youtube), it’s got a fast pace drum beat that gives me the extra push I need to jump start my work out routine in the morning.
I also like Bon Jovi’s “It’s my Life” and Def Lepperd’s “Hysteria”
I watch these music videos on youtube while I workout and lost 10 lbs within 2 weeks!
GET FARR-SHINING STARRRRRR!
Oldie but goodie…. It takes 2/Joy & Pain by Rob Base!!
in the martial arts studio i attend one of my favorite songs is Maria- by Mr. Ricky Martin. it’s just got that fantastic beat to it that makes you sway and have fun.. i don’t know, it could just be the atmosphere and my friends there..

Anytime I need an extra boost I put on Bullet for my Valentine… nothing else quite like it!!!
I like to use a variety of styles and genres to help myself and others throughout what should not be a strenuous Yogic workout, but a pleasent setting where you can just kick back and enjoy some good tunes, get moving, and not have to worry about the sweat trickling down your face (though if you go blind, I’m not liable for any damage it may cause to your eyes and if it does, all that will happen is you’ll gain an acute sense of hearing, so maybe then my music will work its way into your ears!…lol!) I’m also a firm believer in using variety (the spice of life), that good music matters in yoga and that if you let it, you can find a balance between the mental and physical aspects by tapping your spirit on the shoulder and awakening it with so you can flow with ease. They call me “DJ” “DJ Yogi”. Sorry if I took your nickname, so here’s a list of songs I bring to Yoga, though you may not agree with my non-traditional use of yoga music. I say: just go with it becuase you never know, the day you decide to live on the wild side, that’ll be the day you just say, “Music is music!” Enough of that rambling on! Here’s a list of the songs I highly recommend you add to your reportoire of yoga songs that may express your reason for making it to yoga, but hey its just music, so here’s what I got: “teardop” by Massive attack, “Namadjidja” by Issa Bagayogo, “I will possess your heart” by Death Cab for cutie”, “good morning” by Panjabi MC, “evanescent” by Axiom of choice, “Coma” by Buckethead and Azam Ali, “What goes around” by Justin Timberlake, “vermillion, pt 2(bloodstone mix)” by Slipknot, “Sinnerman” by Nina Simone and Felix da housecat, “Love remains the same” by Gavin Rossdale, “Ice (Dusted mix)” by Sarah McLachlan, “angel” by Sarah Mclachlan, “Namaste (Sadhana remix)” by Maneesh De Moor, “Vinyasa” by Soulfood, “breathe” by Telpopmusik, “American Boy (Feat Kanye West)” by Estelle, “hold my hand (KI: Theory remix)” and “invasion” by UNKLE, “My
I came across this site called http://www.myworkoutalbum.com where you can take your favorite workout songs and they will make a workout album for you. They have templates for different sports and will change the speeds. Pretty reasonably priced too. They also have a big database of over 3500 songs listed by beats per minute, so you can find good workout songs on iTunes, buy them (or they’ll buy them for you) and then have them make the album. It’s very cool.

I see a lot of great suggestions here. Some of them have both a good workout beat and relevant motivating lyrics. Here are my five favorites that meet both of those conditions. I haven’t seen any of them mentioned yet.
Rufus – Once You Get Started (…oh it’s hard to stop)
Paul McCartney – Spin It On (…don’t stop, take it back, to the top)
Don Henley – Building the Perfect Beast (need I say more?)
The Cars – Don’t Cha Stop (…don’t cha stop, don’t cha stop, don’t cha stop… if it makes you feel good)
Don Henley – How Bad Do You Want It? (…not bad enough!)
Any hair metal music is great – Ratt, Dokken, etc. Gets you moving and singing!

Kelly Rowland – Work – sit ups
Joy to the World by Three Dog Night and Krazy by Pitbull are two of my favorites.

“Turn this mutha out” – M.C. Hammer

Achtung Baby album by U2 – makes me fly
I use anything with a good beat. Im a dancer so am used to using music so I have certain songs for different workouts and speeds (the faster the song, the faster I go- its kind of a challenge).
Anything with an upbeat tempo is good because it keeps your mind off what your actually doing where as something boring and emotional is just going to keep you in the bored state and isn’t exactly going to help on your workout mission.
I agree with “me’s” comment. 80’s music is the best, very workout-able music. It’d be like doing a new version of jazzicise!!!!!
I like to listen to listen to the CD “Fire In My Bones” by Holly Leer. The title song and “Perfect” get me moving and keep me going!
I work out religiously on my treadmill and music is a must. Funky Town is my very favorite but also enjoy YMCA. The treadmill would not happen in my lifetime if it wasn’t for the music.
Disco Inferno, Bee Gees
I like to mix it up with high energy music from different era’s. ie: Take A Chance on Me-Abba, Why Can’t This
Be Love-VanHalen, Stronger-Kanya West. I try to put slower songs on toward the end of my workout since I tend to pace myself to the beat.
anything by dimmu borgir is fine by me, maybe some jimi hendrix, and the greatful dead.
I love my music but, I actually like to watch a program or movie that I really enjoy. Before I know it, I am OVER 30 minutes.
The Strokes: “Soma,” “Barely Legal, “Last Night,” “Take It or Leave It,” “Hard to Explain,” “Alone Together.”
Sheryl Crow: “Hole in my Pocket;” “All I Wanna Do,” “Soak up the Sun,” “Steve McQueen,” “Abilene.”
Dixie Chicks: “Lubbock or Leave It,” “Long Time Gone,” “White Trash Wedding.”
Ying Yang Twins: “Look Back at It.”
Paul Simon: “Late in the Evening.”
Lyle Lovett: “That’s Right, You’re Not from Texas.”

A word to the wise-
Rock, Techno, Disco, some jazz and country, punk, contemporary Christian, and other styles of popular music are distinguishable from classical music by their beat. In most classical music, marches and Christian hymns, the beat structure looks like this:
1 2 3 4 | 1 2 3 4 or
1 2 | 1 2. Thus, the first and third beat are accented, and the second and fourth are subordinate.
But in almost all pop music, the beat structure looks like this:
1 2 3 4 |1 2 3 4
Is it a big deal? Yes. The backbeat (pop music) goes exactly against the natural rhythm of your heart.
This is fact, even though it is rarely mentioned outside of the music world.
Be forewarned, then, that excercising to pop music may put your heart under significant stress-the workout plus the beat of the music. So play it safe, go with classical music. It also is more beneficial to the brain-there is loads of research to prove it (and also plenty of research to show the debilitating effects that rock can have on one’s body.)
My $0.02 as a musician.

a few people have already said it, but what makes time go the fastest is when you listen to a set of songs where you have absolutely no idea what the next song is. this is risky, because if you use the radio you get commercials and if you use shuffle this is also risky. if there was a way to make a playlist and then forget what you put on it, that would be the best. i guess you could get really drunk and make a playlist, and if you did it right, when you wake up you wont remember the songs on the playlist. but even this would be very dangerous and hard. plus you run the risk of accidentally seeing your playlist on your ipod the next day before you have even started your workout. if you got your friend to make the playlist for you, but then you run the risk of your friends choice of songs totally sucking nuts. it seems there is no way to make a playlist and forget the songs you put on it…. There is no free lunch
i like cascada songs when working out. i need something really fast to keep me going!
