Vote in This Week's Poll: What's your biggest diet blunder?

By , About.com GuideJuly 23, 2007

Follow me on:

I'm sure most of us have been guilty of a variety of dieting mistakes at one time or another, from eating one too many pieces of pizza to mindlessly munching on a big bag of Doritoes out of boredom. Or maybe the Doritoes thing is just me. Either way, we all seem to have at least one bad habit that we've had for so long, it seems impossible to change.

When looking at how you eat, what is it you do on a regular basis that you know you need to change? Do you eat too much junk? Or maybe you eat when you're not hungry. Whatever it is, vote in this week's poll and tell us about it.

Poll: What's your biggest diet blunder?

1. Skipping meals and eating too much later
2. Eating too much junk food
3. Eating out too much
4. Not watching my portion sizes
5. Eating when I'm tired, depressed or stressed
6. Avoiding fruits, veggies and whole grains

I know I have at least one person in me to lose but with stress as my 1st biggest problem, so is other things. I don’t run, with asthma can’t control it. I want to exercise, just not in my neighborhood. I need a lifestyle change and hopefully that will come in the next 6 months. But 1st and foremost is stres.

No blunders: I don’t diet. I try to follow a healthy lifestyle. If I gain a few pounds, I don’t worry about it. I just watch the junk food for a few days!

Eat healthy and exercise, but if I’m going to “fall off the wagon,” it’s going to be at night…that’s when I’ll find myself roaming. Frustrating!

I am really bad about not drinking enough water throughout the day. I drink water at meals but prefer to drink diet coke or coffee btw meals when I should be drinking more water…

I used to depend on being able to find something in a machine or go out to eat. Never again! Every day I am prepared with food that is healthy and satisfying. I allow myself to splurge on the weekend but keep my week strict.

The problem I have with “dieting” is just the word. If I say I am going to make dietary changes (for example, eating only my portions out of or on my kids plates, the pounds fall off LOTS easier. Drink water, but get a little flavor with the store brand or crystal lite brand shake ins. Kool Aid even has a shake in for all the kids in us!!

I do really good eating healthy for 3 weeks, then 1 week before my period I crave everything. Mostly sweets, but anything will do.

I don’t believe in ‘dieting’, it to me only sets you up for failure. Making some changes, and small ones, so you can stick to them, always work best for me. Joining an exercise class at the YMCA, is a good start too, get a friend to join with you, this helps me a lot. Then I can’t use excuses, because I would be letting someone else down. And realizing the weight didn’t come over night, so you aren’t going to lose it over night. I don’t own a scale, because that is not a ‘healthy’ way to track your weight loss.

I too have problems with night time eating. I do well all day and then give in to temptations at night. My trick: I tell myself “you’ll feel so good about yourself in the morning if you don’t give in tonight”. It works!

Drinking wine in the evning is my huge blunder, as it is a habit & I know there are lots of empty calories in WHITE wine, which is what I drink. It is just so relaxing. I never used to have to watch my wt., but I am now 54 & I can tell that aging is slowing things down. I am very active though & do stay in shape. I eat healthy, rather than actually diet. Wine is my only vice.

The opposite of the first option, I eat too much and then skip meals afterwards to compensate, then i get hungry and eat too much again, and the cycle continues until i exercise my way out of needing to eat less!
