Can Diets Make You Fat?

Friday August 3, 2007
I've never been a big fan of diets (see: Reasons to Quit Dieting Forever) and now I've got some support in some new information by Dr. Len Kravitz.

Kravitz evaluated nine data-based research studies to find out what happens to our bodies when we diet. Here's what he found:

  • In women who dieted, BMR was lowered up to 20%, even more in very low-calorie diets
  • There was an average weight gain of 0-5 kg (0-11 lbs)
  • The women in these studies experienced a rebound effect after going off the diets, gaining much of the weight back

So, instead of wasting precious time and energy on diets that aren't sustainable, work on small changes each day to help you reach your goals. If you need some help, try these resources:

I’m glad you told me this. I have been on a fair number of diets, and have realized that the minute I even consider a diet my body goes into mourning for all the “goodies” that it can’t have. Suddenly I’m innundated with cravings and feel deprived, even though it has only been a few minutes! Today I decided to just try to eat better when I can, exercise regularly, and love myself the way I am.

yea when someone stops dieting and go back to their bad eating habits they are going to gain the weight back, but obviously the diet had to work if there was weight for them to gain back.

I do agree to the max! I’m at a healthy weight and I’m fit, but I wasn’t always. I tell everyone who mentions diet and exercise to me: Never go on a diet. change your lifestyle. Focus on eating healthy and moderate exercise in a consistent routine.

I was extremely over weight and lost 50lbs
since February just by doing strengthening excersizes until I felt strong enough to do a few minutes of excersize a few times each day. (Maybe 5 minutes) I gradually increased as I became stronger. I still break my workout up throughout the day and am still losing. I also stopped eating after 7 pm. I am shocked at the inches I have lost!!!

My only concerns about dieting is the temptations and cravings you get for fatty foods, sugars, and those extra calories that you don’t need. Especially when your faced with having to work in a fastfood restaurant like I do.

Diet foods are meant to keep you on a the diet…preservatives, colorings, food additives…odd food portions and combinations…
Eat fresh fruits and vegetables, grains, nuts etc…stay away from processed as much as possible…learn to cook for yourself and prepare things the day or night before so you don’t get stuck starving and with no options..
As for the exercise just move your butt everyday…go for a walk…swim…bike…do the activities that you like to do…you’ll keep doing them and don’t be afraid to do different things…nobody says your movement has to stay the same…
The Diet industry has a vested interest in keeping you on a yoyo string - remember that…impossible standards keep you running after a carrot most people can never catch…
Don’t worry about being stick thin…find your healthy weight and do your best to live healthy…
Being healthy shouldn’t be a temporary thing you do until you get back to your “real life”…it should be who you are regardless of the diet ads…

lifestyle changes are the way to go and it seems those people who realize it are the biggest winners. its alot easier then any diet and so much healthier. i lost 50 lbs 3 yrs ago and have kept it off. my health is much better and i havent been sick with cold or flu in 2 yrs. exercise is also very important for the health but you dont need to go kill yourself 7 hours a day. good luck to all and delete the word diet from your choosies.

i realised that eating small portions of any food you crave at every 2 hour interval will speed up you metabolism. diet. adding on an hour daily walk is the key to a healthy diet.

Fad dieters almost always lose, but so do people who think “little here little there”. That mentality doesn’t work because overweight, sedentary individuals usually do a “little here, helluvalot there (whoops)”, even if they don’t think they do. Skimping in some periods and not others can cause your metabolism to slow down and will cause your body to store more fat when you do go overboard. If you want to get any real results it’s very simple. I am training my girlfriend to lose weight (preparing her food, running with her, etc), and have been doing so for the last 4 months (she has lost over 35 lbs the right way). If anyone wants to know specifics feel free to shoot me an e-mail. kjlph@yahoo.com
