Exercise of the Week - Plank with Leg Lift

By , About.com GuideOctober 9, 2007

Follow me on:

In the past few years, the plank exercise has become almost as standard as crunches when it comes to working the abs. One reason is because it's an excellent stabilization exercise that involves almost every muscle in the body with a focus, of course, on the core. Just holding the plank is tough enough, but I've added a little intensity to the move by doing it on an exercise ball and adding a leg lift. Adding the unstable surface of the ball along with the balance challenge of the leg lift really adds depth and intensity to this move.

If you haven't done the plank before, you'll want to work up to it with a modified version on your forearms and knees instead of on the toes. The key to the Plank with Leg Lift is, first, to make sure you have enough strength in the abs and back to keep from sagging as you lift your leg. You'll also need to use your entire body for stabilization to stay on the ball as it moves under your feet. You can make it a bit easier by positioning the ball under the thighs.

Do it right: This move is shown on an exercise ball, but you can also do it on the floor. Get into a pushup position with feet/shins resting on the ball, hands under shoulders and abs contracted. Your body should be in a straight line from heat to feet. Keeping the core tight, lift the right leg off the ball a few inches, hold for a few seconds and lower. Repeat on the left leg, alternating for 8-16 reps on each side.

Any lower body exercise would increase the size of your legs… squats, lunges, leg press, leg extensions, leg curls, calf raises, among others. It may not decrease the size of your butt, but if your legs are bigger, then your butt won’t appear to be as big.

I am trying to REDUCE the size of my legs & calves – how can I hone in on this problem? I train 2 days a week with cardio and then cardio the 3 remaining days….

Good exercise. I’ll add it to my routine. I don’t have a ball so I’ll use a chair.

I’m in the process of dieting and exercising so I can lose weight. How do I lose weight, but I don’t want my butt to get smaller? I definitely do not want a flat butt? I love my curves, but want to slim down….

I have been exercising for a few months now. I am impressed with the results but the problem is my butt which i love is disappearing right before my eyes! I do lunges and squats, they have made it firm and shapely BUT smaller!!! Is it my body selecting where to shed off weight or what am I not doing?
Very Worried.

Dear Ms Waehner, do you have any exercises for people with osteoarthritis suffering from pain in the hands, shoulders, knee, ankle feet. I am 56 yrs old and I would like to start some exercises which would not put too much strain on my bones. I am overweight. Height 1.65 cm and weight 80 kg. Elizabeta
