Winter Exercise Essentials

Wednesday November 14, 2007

I have to confess that, when it gets below 30 degrees, your chances of seeing me outside for a leisurely run are about the same as seeing me perform brain surgery. And I think I'd rather do the brain surgery, if given a choice. But, despite my bone-deep loathing of cold weather, I do make it a point to get out on occasion to breath some non-regurgitated air. To do so requires a good selection of quality winter clothes as well as an artful ability to layer.

To that end, I've collected a great selection of winter gear over the years, as has my husband, and I've posted some of our favorites in my latest article, Winter Exercise Essentials. The list includes base layers, tops, hats, gloves and more for both men and women to keep you warm, comfortable and dry this winter season. If you have any favorites or any great tips for staying warm, feel free to leave them in comments.

YakTrax are devices that slip over your shoes for traction. They work great and are available in a version for regular walking or for jogging. I live in Arizona though, so I cannot begin to imagine what jogging in freezing temperatures must be like. :)

I always wear spandex underneath my clothes when I go running in the winter. Its always better to be too warm than too cold

My biggest problem is my feet get cold. What do you have that will keep my feet warm and still be light enough to wear on a bicycle?

When your out for lengths of time in the cold use the chemical inserts for shoes and gloves. Once you break them open they really keep your piggys warm and your fingers toasty!

In the nice weather months I work out, run ect. out side, in the cold months I get on my Nordic Track and my cardio glide, along with my push ups and crunches

Did you know that you burn more calories exercising in colder weather rather than warmer weather?
The reason is that your body works harder to stay warm when its cold.
