Vote in This Week's Poll: Will you exercise over the Thanksgiving holiday?

Monday November 19, 2007
It's Thanksgiving week, one of my favorite holidays, and time for mashed potatoes, dressing (or stuffing, if you're a yankee), green bean casserole, apple pie...let the eating commence! There are probably many of us who are already trying to figure out how to mitigate the calorie-damage with extra workouts, but exercise is always tough around this time of year. This week, I'll be giving you some ideas for squeezing in some exercise even if you have no equipment and very little time. In the meantime, vote in this week's poll and tell us about your exercise plans (or non-exercise plans) this week and leave a comment if you have any tips for staying fit this weekend.

Poll: Will you exercise over the Thanksgiving holiday?

1. Yes, I'll try to stick with my regular schedule
2. I'll try to fit some kind of exercise in if I can
3. I'll stay as active as I can, but probably won't do any structured workouts
4. I don't plan on doing any exercise
5. It's too hard to exercise when I'm traveling and visiting with family
6. I don't celebrate Thanksgiving
7. Other - Please explain in comments

(1) Staci says:

I am hoping to exercise more. My gym offers a great holiday “special” and I plan to tak advantage of it by taking a spinning class, followed by water aerobics and then another spinning class. At the very least, I’ll stick with my regular schedule. It helps when you don’t live near family and aren’t going home for the holidays. (I would rather be with family, but oh-well!)

(4) Nanci says:

My gym is closing early on some of the days surrounding Thanksgiving, so some of my regular classes have been cancelled. I will need to plan to exercise at home at least one evening, when I normally would be taking classes at the gym. But, one of my favorite classes, Zumba, will be 1-1/2 hrs, instead of 1 hr, so I’m really excited about that! I plan to attend the rest of my normally-scheduled classes. I actually love exercising, so I wouldn’t think of taking this time off, just because of the holiday. Perhaps someday Molly will come to love exercise, as well, and believe others when they say they plan to exercise.

We are signed up for a 10K Thanksgiving morning and then a 18-mile run over the weekend. I plan on bringing only healthy side dishes to dinner. That should mitigate any damage from the Thanksgiving meal.

(9) Heidi says:

I will definitely start the day out with a 6-mile run-walk. Hopefully I will be able to get the family out after lunch for at least a leisurely stroll. Molly–I hate being called a liar. Why is exercising on Thanksgiving impossible for you to conceive of? I would dream of missing it–it gets me all energized and in a great mood, ready to be with family :) Plus, it definitely curbs my appetite and helps offset any possible overeating!

Holiday times are the best times for me to exercise. I am more motivated at this time than at other times because I am not working by normal 40 hour week job. I am also motivated because I realize that extra food and snacks will be always available so I want to burning extra calaries so I do not feel as guilty while I enjoy some holiday tasty treats. Holiday season is also a good time to exercise because there are times when a diversion is needed and I can not think of a better diversion than a good walk or some refreshing form of exercise.

(26) mark says:

To Len: You need to lay off Molly. I’m glad you worked out today; I did too. So obviously Molly’s words didn’t stop us. I think we’re both confident enough to offer encouragement (if we did it, she can too) instead of resorting to name-calling and insults.
