What's Your Body Image?

Thursday March 20, 2008

If you pay attention to the media and, let's face it, it's almost impossible not to, you're no doubt inundated with images of beautiful celebrities who seem effortlessly thin. What we don't see is the work these people have to do to look the way they do and, trust me, it isn't effortless. We also don't always take into account that celebrities, in some form or fashion, are paid to look good...it's part of their job and, as a result, they're much more motivated to spend lots of time on their bodies and looks than we are.

That said, seeing these beautiful people all the time has an affect on us. We want to look as perfect as they do and that means too many of us end up with a skewed body image, thinking that if we could just trim this area or build up that area, everything would be better. We even end up punishing ourselves because we don't look perfect.

The good news is, there is something we can do about it and it has to do with learning to love our bodies. As you go through life today, stop for a moment and think about what you can do to appreciate your body just the way it is.

Great advice, however this should not be used as an excuse not to take care of yourself! Let’s not forget the obesity epidemic in this country.

This is the advice we need to hear over and over. I have suffered with anorexia my entire life and although I am no longer in the grips of it, it affects my life every day. I struggle with negative self image and am constantly working towards overcoming not only the physical aspect of the disease but more importantly the mental aspect.

My issue is, the celebs that promote the weight loss food program (you all know the one I mean). Granted, it’s great, but there’s no way in H*** that as a retiree, that I can afford $10 a day…maybe there’s a celeb out there that could chip in?????

Body image. Okay,, when I was younger I thought I was fat. 5′8″ tall weighing about 125 lbs,,I thought I was fat. That was in the 80’s. I am now 34 years old and I no longer think that I am FAT. I weigh about 140 and am fine with that.
Here is the problem. After 3 children my body looks like a whipping post. Sttretch marks, loose skin,, you name it. The biggest I ever got in my whole life was 185 lbs. Still, my skin never went back to normal.
I work out almost every day, I eat healthy, and I am at a healthy weight. No one knows that my body looks like this. I hide it. In cloths I look pretty good, everyone says I have a wonderfull figure, which makes me want to hide myself even more.
My body image sucks, and no one is ever going to be able to fix how I hate the way I look. I even try to hide myself from my husband!!!
I know I need help,,I just don’t think it’s possible to help me.
