Get Your Body Ready for Summer

Wednesday May 21, 2008
Summer is just around the corner and a lot of us are already feeling the pain of going from winter potato-like behavior to the craziness of warm-weather yard work, bike rides and other outdoor activities. Many of us are also still struggling with a few extra pounds from winter (to keep us warm, of course). If that's the case for you, it's not too late to get in shape for summer.

Weight Loss

One place to start is with my summer weight loss program which includes the basics about setting up a cardio and strength training program as well as some nutrition advice.

Strength Training

Your next step is to check out my resources on strength training. Many of us forget that lifting weights can help with weight loss and it can also strengthen your body for summertime activities - a great way to avoid weekend warrior syndrome. I've created a detailed list of exercises for each muscle group to get you started:

Last, check out my updated list of Summer Exercise Essentials if you're looking for clothes to keep you looking good and feeling good when the weather gets hot. And, if you have any favorite ways you get ready for summer, leave a comment and tell us about it.

I really don’t mind some suggestions and ideas but, you made this post all about you, verses us, the readers. “Try my work-outs, check out my style choices…” I think the fact that your writing a column is going to your head a bit.

I appreciate your articles. I started trying to keep fit over fifty years ago. In the ’60’s when I was a cop, a trustee who washed the patrol cars suggested I try weight training — keeping in mind that the only physical activity in most jails and prisons in those days was weight training, he was a buff young fellow. So I began weight training. Columns and advice like yours were not readily available. Looking through today’s eyes, our level of ignorance at that time was incredible. I am still pumping iron, but as a result of research and columns like yours informing us about it, I am showing some positive results. Keep up the good work; I,for one appreciate it.
