Are You After the Perfect Body?

Thursday July 17, 2008
The perfect body. That’s a goal many of us have and sometimes do crazy things to get – exercising for hours, skipping meals, fad diets or buying things from a middle-of-the-night infomercial in the hopes that we will finally get rid of those love handles or those chunky thighs. Our parents may have told us we can do anything if we just work hard enough and that may be true in many cases…but that doesn’t always hold true when it comes to changing our bodies.

What you've probably figured out is that all the exercise and dieting in the world may not be enough to achieve that perfection. In the end, we’re still a product of our genes and that means having to accept that there are just some things we can’t change no matter what we do. We eventually reach a point where we wonder – “How much can I really change my body and what do I do if I can’t make it perfect?"

It’s easy to get hung up on perfection when you’re surrounded by beautiful, perfect-looking bodies in magazines, on TV and on the Internet. It’s not so easy to let go of that desire to be perfect, but doing so may open doors you never knew were there. If you're frustrated with your flaws, start by learning more about your body image with the Body Acceptance Quiz. Then, learn more about how you can accept your body and focus on getting the perfect body for you.

You forgot to mention at the gym !
I see girls working cardio and reading those glamor mags…. for me perfect is being the correct weight for my age and height.

Very True. You can only do the best you can with what God gave you.

I think “perfect” should be more about how well your body works. I am overweight but fit. I work out everyday and walk with my family daily as well. I can’t get the extra weight off because I REALLY enjoy good food. My Dr. says I am in great shape. I can hug my hubby and kids, my legs carry me where I want to go and I can dance, ride a bike or bowl. I am not totally satisfied with my body because I am not magazine perfect, but I am pretty darn happy and as long as it works and family and friends love me … I have the perfect body!!!

i am a VERY happy size 12. i am fit and healthy and very strong. just have those birthing hips LOL. but i keep seeing this commercials like “i went from a size 10 to a 3″ and its a no wonder so many ppl who are at a healthy range do unhealthy things to get to that “size 3″ b/c they are brainwashed into believing a smaller size means a healthier weight. the perfect body is the strong body and the one with the proper amount of body fat(guess what you do NEED body fat to protect organs). its not the scale number, the jean size, or how much you can bench. just being able to function day to day without pain or issues. that is truly the perfect body. we only get one so why not make it a perfectly functioning one!!! i am with patti!!!

Sorry, but this sounds more like an excuse to be overweight. Not saying one should be trying to attain the perfect body…just saying no one should be selling themselves short just because it’s very difficult to achieve a slim, toned figure.

Not everyone can achieve a “slim” body like the mags show. Not everyone has that body structure. Oh i have been slim, at the cost of permannet damage to by body. 115 lbs size 7 and i looked sick. So no excuses as long as one is healthy and fit for their weight, then they have achieved their perfect body!

I am 59 years old and still worry about what I weigh and how I look. I know that I am obsessed with it. I work out everyday to stay @ 132 lbs. and I am 5′7. I have always been obsessed with my weight going from 185 to 132lbs. I have weighed this much for 5 years but I run for at least an hour everyday in sickness and in health. At times I wore size 16 and thought that I needed to lose weight. Now I wear size 8 and feel fat and think I need to lose more weight. I wish I could just except my body at my old age but I can’t. I am very active, riding horse, hunting, and fishing. I am a woman even though I have those hobbies. My husband and I do all of that together. All of my friends say that I should gain about 15 lbs. but my husband likes super skinny. I have a big problem I know. I recently had a concussion and a brain bleed from a horse accident and I am not suppose to do strenous activities but I still run an hour a day and take pain pills to get by. Any ideas?
