Vote in This Week's Poll: Is it hard to stick to healthy habits when you're stressed?

Monday September 22, 2008
We all deal with a certain amount of stress every day and a little stress can be a good thing, motivating us to work hard and get things done. Too much stress, however, can be paralyzing and, with all that's going on in the financial markets, gas prices and the devastating weather around the country, a lot of us are feeling overwhelmed.

When I get stressed, I like to run around the house and scream as loud as I can. Okay, maybe that's just what I'd like to do, but that probably wouldn't be all that helpful. The truth is, I don't always know the best way to deal with stress. Obviously, exercise can be one way to burn off extra tension, but it's also tempting to turn unhealthy behaviors - drinking too much, eating too much and avoiding the gym. That only compounds the problem and we end up feeling guilty on top of everything else.

I'm curious about how you handle stress. Do you fall off the exercise wagon or do you turn to healthy behaviors to deal with extra stress? Vote in this week's poll and leave a comment about how you handle stress.

nothing like the punching bag to bleed off a little tension. I also increase all my fitness goals and work it out that way.

The irony is that when we’re stressed, that’s probably when exercise is most important.

When I have a stressful day, I look forward to coming home and taking an extra run in the evening.

While I eat more when I’m stressed, I also tend to excercise more as a stress relief. However, often the source of my stress is often related to being too busy - and therefore I have less actual time to excercise, and end up more stressed!
