New Spring Workouts

By , About.com GuideMarch 23, 2011

Follow me on:

The calendar says it's spring, which means one thing for those of us in the Midwest: More snow. It's unfortunate that calendar spring is typically much different than reality spring around here but, elsewhere, people tell me the air is warm, the sun is out and things are blooming.

Thanks for the update.

The good thing is that all this extra daylight means we have more time to do things and, even better, we have more energy to do them. Now is a great time to reinvent your workouts and focus on getting your body strong and fit for warm weather, even if you live in a place where warm weather is a long, long way away. Long. Way. Away. Not that I'm counting.

To that end, I've created a few new workouts for your exercise pleasure. These workouts cover a variety of intensities, fitness levels and interests and are a great way to invigorate your workouts with something new and challenging:

  • Tri-Set Strength - This is a total body strength workout that includes alternating tri-sets. The exercises change with each set, so you never do exactly the same exercise twice. This workout is a good choice if you're easily bored and like things to move fast.
  • Basic Cardio and Strength Circuit - This circuit alternates low impact cardio moves with basic strength moves for a quick, whole body workout.
  • Outdoor Circuit - If you can get outside and you want something a little different (and you don't mind looking a little weird to passersby), this workout includes a variety of low and high intensity cardio (jogging, sprinting or walking) along with high intensity strength moves like walking lunges, tree pushups and scissor jumps.
  • Heavy Strength - This total body workout takes you back to basics with classic exercises (squats, lunges, pushups, etc.) and a focus on using heavy weights to build strength, power and lean muscle tissue.

What about you? Do you have any workouts you're doing to get ready for spring? Do you have more energy and are you ramping things up? Leave a comment and tell us about your spring workouts.
