Workout of the Week: Bootcamp

By , About.com GuideAugust 2, 2011

Follow me on:

The other day I was at the gym and was nearly knocked over by a red-faced woman who blew by me at an impressive sprint. Behind her came a red-faced man and, behind him, a gleeful trainer shouting - "Faster! Faster! I know you can go faster!"

When the red-faced woman passed me again (this time staggering and gasping for air) she mumbled, "Sorry...bootcamp," while her husband remained sprawled on the floor behind her and the trainer continued to shout in a loud and gleeful manner.

This red-faced breathlessness is what bootcamp is all about and, while it's always been popular, I've noticed it's more widespread than ever. Perhaps it's our new fascination with high intensity exercise or perhaps it's just that us trainers can rarely pass up such a prime opportunity to torture people while getting paid for it.

Either way, bootcamp workouts are calorie-burners for sure and you don't have to join a class to enjoy them. My latest bootcamp workout offers the usual suspects - burpees, pushups and squats, along with a few unusual moves to keep things interesting.

Even better, you can do it on your own without a trainer's evil laughter sounding in your ear.

If you want something advanced and challenging, give it a try and be sure to leave a comment about your own bootcamp experiences. Do you love it? Hate it? Love and hate it? Leave a comment and tell us about it.

This is back to military style training that was used back in the 70’s and 80’s. I personally love these workouts. Throw in some rope climbing, log pt, obstacle course trainging and an over and under circuit and you will definitely have a good variety. On the over and under you have to go over the higher obstacles and under the lower ones. These workouts are very vigorous and leave you feeling totally charged.

Don’t love or hate boothcamp workouts, just can’t do them. Rebook 10 min. workouts work better for me. They have three level of strength training which give you a chance to work your way up to the highest level of the workout. The cost is 4.00 to 6.00 dollars per DVD. You can find them at your local Waimart.

Military style training is good for those with less motivation.

There are some people in this world who just can’t do strenous workout due to physical limitations. Short intervals workouts are better than none at all. Bootcamp workouts have their place . Just because a person is limited physical dosen’t mean they are not motivated. They find what works for them. They don’t give up and give in. I don’t judge! I happy for anyone who have the ability to do bootcamp workouts.:)

I am not a fan of bootcamps for two reasons: 1. they dont personalize for a clients goal whatsoever. 2. i know why trainers do them ($$$$).
