My friend *Barbara, a registered dietician and guru in all things food and health and everything related thereto, has this problem. Whenever she hears the words, "I feel sooooo fat," her head explodes and her brains fall out and she has this weird kind of seizure that makes the entire building shake.
It's not pretty.
When she pulls herself together, she reminds the poor utterer of the phrase of the following fact: "Fat is NOT a feeling!"
She's right of course, but it certainly doesn't feel that way sometimes, does it? Think of what it's like when you eat that one extra serving you should've avoided...or what happens when you try to put your jeans on right out of the dryer. Or what happens when you're retaining water and feeling like a walking, talking whale. Feeling fat often leads to feeling bad about ourselves and feeling bad about ourselves can drive some of our worst behaviors, such as emotional eating.
There isn't an instant cure for feeling fat, but I do offer some ideas for how to pull yourself out of that mindset in my latest article, Feeling Fat? How to Feel better Right Now. It takes a bit of self-talk and taking some specific actions to get your mind back into the positive I'm-good-enough-I'm-smart-enough-and-doggone-it-people-like-me frame of mind. With a little bit of work, you can move from feeling fat to feeling better about yourself.
