Use these tools, gadgets and tips for staying motivated to exercise

1. FreeStyle Pedometer

Pedometers are one of the best ways to stay active...trust me. Clip one onto your belt and you'll move a lot more than usual, just so you can watch your steps grow. I've tried a few pedometers, but this FreeStyle is my favorite. I can see the numbers and it's easy to scroll through the different modes - distance, steps, timer, and more.

2. Bodyminder Workout & Exercise Journal

This journal is quite comprehensive in terms of types of exercise listed, which I appreciate as my work-out is varied. The strength training section is perfect for almost any program. It's also helpful and easy to keep track of your diet, and let's face it, the two go hand-in-hand. I also like the "extras" included in this diary, like the weekly planning schedule, progress pages and calendar.

3. Digital Camera

One way to keep yourself on track with your goals is to track your progress. You can do this by weighing yourself, etc. but you can also keep track by taking pictures of yourself. Yes, the before and after shot! you can see your body change. The Canon PowerShot S230 is a 3.2 megapixel, compact digital camera. Relative to other compact cameras on the market, it is midpriced at around $380.

4. Heart Rate Monitor

One problem I have with many of my clients is that they work too hard during their cardio workouts. When we monitor their heart rates and find they need to slow down, they suddenly love me! Ah, it doesn't have to hurt. Use the heart rate monitor in conjuction with perceived exertion to make sure you're working at the rigth intensity. Polar makes good watch.

5. MP3 Player

MY MP3 player is one of the best things I've ever bought. After lugging around that CD player, now I can have all my favorite songs in a palm-sized format. Listening to music while you exercise is an excellent way to keep your spirits up.

6. Personal Trainer

Need some motivation but don't want to shell out a ton of cash for a personal trainer? Try online training. And I'm not just saying that because I work there.

7. Massage

I admit, some of those massagers out there are pretty much crapola. But, the shiatsu massager is one of the few items out there that I actually use on a regular basis. Now, what does this have to do with exercise? Not much, really. But it makes you feel good, helps loosen up your tight neck muscles and it makes a nice reward for yourself for exercising.
