Exercises for Your Abs

The following exercises show examples of moves targeting the abdominals.  The most common ab exercises include moves like crunches, bicycles and reverse crunches, but are a number of variations that allow you to work your abs in different ways.  Below are some examples of ab exercises for all fitness levels.  Click on the pictures and hyperlinks to view detailed instructions or to see a larger picture.  To work these exercises into a routine:

  • Beginners:  Choose 1-2 exercises for 1-2 sets of 12-16 reps
  • Inter/Adv:  Choose 3-5 exercises, focusing on the Core Exercises, for 2-3 sets of 16 reps.
Crunches
Crunches, which involve bringing the shoulders towards the hip, are the most common exercises for the rectus abdominis, also known as the 'six-pack.'
Oblique Exercises
Ab exercises that involve rotation target the obliques - the muscles on either side of the abs, though they also involve the rectus abdominis as well.
Core Exercises
These more advanced exercises involve not just the abs but the entire torso, as well as other muscles that help stabilize the body.
