Now that you know how very important exercise is to your life, it's time to start making some changes to incorporate it.  Yes, you're busy, you're tired and you don't have time.  Lack of time is the number one excuse most people give for not exercising.  If you find it difficult to stick to a programmed routine, why not be more creative?  Here are some easy ways to stay active all day long without even having to change your clothes.

  1. Take the stairs.  This seems obvious, but many people go for the elevators, escalators and other handy shortcuts to their destination.  Take the stairs every day and you'll burn calories and elevate your mood and energy level.
  2. Walk more.  How many times have you driven around the mall (or even the gym!) parking lot for 10 minutes hoping to find a parking spot close to the doors?  Well, here's your opportunity to become more active.  Park your car way across the parking lot and walk briskly to the door.  When you get inside, don't forget to take the stairs!
  3. Move around.  Another obvious one, but how often to you find yourself sitting at your computer for hours on end without getting up?  Set an alarm to go off every hour and make yourself stand up, stretch, or walk around the building for five or so minutes.
  4. Reward yourself.  Want to soak in a hot bath?  Make that your reward for a brisk 30-minute walk.
  5. Leave your car in the garage.  When you need to run to the market down the street for a jug of milk, Why not turn it into exercise?  Make it a quick jog and you'll get your milk and strengthen your heart.
  6. Play with your kids/grandkids.  Keeping up with kids is hard work, right?  So put your running shoes on and give it a try.
  7. Clean your house.  Running up and down the stairs with heavy baskets of laundry counts.  So does cutting the grass, weeding the garden and scrubbing the floors. Kill two birds with one stone and clean while you're exercising!

For more information about starting an exercise program or finding easy ways to incorporate it into your day, read my article How to Exercise.  However you decide to do it, staying active can not only benefit your body, it can also benefit your mind as the blood flows and your brain wakes up.  Why not make an effort to be more active so you don't have to worry about SeDS?  Come on...stand up right now and go for a five minute walk.  I dare ya!
