Fall is almost here, and it's time to stock up on warm, sweat-wicking exercise clothes. You may also need a little something extra to jump-start your morning workout. Don't worry, I've got you covered. Check out my top exercise essentials for your fall workouts.
Outdoor workouts in iffy weather are already tough, so having clothes that are comfortable, warm and protective is a must. This is a great jacket for fall, especially on those wet, chilly mornings or on days when you're not sure what the weather may do. This jacket is more of a shell, so it doesn't necessarily keep you warm. It does provide protection, though, from the wind and the rain without adding bulk. There are pockets for your stuff and reflective piping along the sides, so you're visible in the dark.
Dressing for fall weather exercise can be tough. You want clothes that are lightweight, so you don't get too hot, but you also want to stay warm. This wind jacket can help, because it's both waterproof and windproof. The fabric is breathable, and there are also mesh inserts to allow air circulation. What I really like about this jacket is that the back is longer than the front, so your backside is protected as well. My only problem with this one is that it's a little loose over the midsection, which allows cold air to sneak in sometimes. Other than that, this is a great addition to your fall wardrobe.
At the beginning of fall, you may be able to get away with shorts if the temperatures are in the 50s or 60s. When they drop below that, though, a light pair of sports pants can protect you from the weather. These Dri-FIT running pants are a good choice; they're breathable and light, which will keep you dry without making you too hot. You could even slide on long underwear under these for colder runs or walks.
Finding workout tights or pants that fit well and are flattering at the same time is tough. That's one reason I love these pants. They're semi-fitted — just tight enough that they don't hang off you, but not so tight that you feel self-conscious. I wouldn't say these are my favorites for running, but I do like them for outdoor walks or gym workouts when I need coverage, breathability and comfort all at the same time.
This top is perfect for outdoor workouts on chilly fall mornings. The fabric includes some really interesting features — it gives you UV protection, wicks away sweat while adding warmth and it resists odor. It's lightweight, which is what you want once you get warmed up, and it works well on its own or as a layering piece when the temperatures drop.
I've had this top for awhile and wear it for my outdoor running workouts. It's great for outdoor workouts, because it's light and breathable, but it also keeps me warm without adding too much bulk. The fabric is designed to wick away sweat, and it has a drop hem in the back to keep the backside covered. This top also makes a great layering piece for winter workouts.
There's nothing worse than heading out for a walk or run and realizing your ears are frozen blocks of ice. It may not be cold enough for a hat, but a fleece headband may be just the ticket. I have the Columbia headband and wear it throughout the fall to keep my ears warm. It's light and comfortable — perfect for chilly fall mornings.
Thorlo makes some of the best workout socks I've tried, particularly for cold weather workouts. Though they're expensive, they last a long time and provide great cushioning while keeping your feet cool and dry. You may want to try these on in a store with your running or walking shoes just to make sure they aren't too thick for your shoes.
I find that one of the hardest parts of morning exercise is getting out the door, and this is especially true when the weather turns cold. If you're like me, you may want to try a gentle way to wake up your body. I often pop in this video on those mornings I'm feeling cranky and rebellious. The gentle, slow yoga workouts are a nice way to wake up your body. There are two workouts included, both about 20 minutes long and with a meditation at the end. I actually like to do the P.M. workout in the morning; the A.M. workout sometimes puts me right back to sleep.
