Working out at the gym means you need some serious equipment to make your workouts easy, fun and efficient. Check out my top picks for what you need during and after your gym workouts.

1. All Purpose Gym Bag

Your gym bag is probably the most important thing you need to cart around your clothes, shoes, iPods and other workout essentials.  I'm not a fan of spending a lot of money on gym bags because they do have to be replaced more often then most bags (mostly due to the stink factor).  Under Armour makes a variety of gym bags, for both men and women, that are stylish, practical and don't cost an arm and a leg.

2. iPod

The next most important thing is your iPod.  Music is crucial for giving you energy for workouts and it also helps block out things that can be distracting at the gym (like the guy who always yells like Tarzan when he lifts weights).  The iPod Nano is a great choice because it's so small and portable, but you should also consider an iTouch.  With the iTouch, you can download fitness apps or even video workouts you can follow along with at the gym.

What you wear to the gym is another important aspect of your workout.  You want bottoms that are comfortable, yet flattering and that do the job while keeping you looking stylish.  I'm a huge fan of Prana shorts, for both men and women.  They make a variety of styles and they're always made of high quality materials.

Saving time is essential for gym workouts, especially if you're heading right to work after your routine.  This little gem is one of the best things I ever bought and perfect for after your workout. One bottle allows you to wash your face, hair and body and it's perfect for a quick shower after your workout.  I wouldn't want to use this every day because it doesn't condition hair as well as separate conditioners, but it's great when you're really short on time.

5. Post-Workout Patagonia Hoody for Men and Women

Patagonia is known for it's quality active gear, so you might splurge on one of their hoodies.  Hoodies are great for keeping you warm on the way to the gym when it's chilly outside and to pull on after a workout, if you don't have time to shower and change into your street clothes.  These also do double duty, keeping you warm and dry when you workout outdoors.

I love these socks.  In fact, these might be the best workout socks I've ever tried.  I love them so much, I bought my husband several pairs and now he loves them too.  These socks are pricey, as socks go, but they offer the perfect blend of comfort, padding and breathability.  They're great for running, walking or just about any workout you can think of.  Keep a few extra pairs in your gym back for a great workout.

My husband is the kind of person who goes to the gym and just picks random machines...hey, why listen to me? I'm just a trainer, right? Anyway, I bought him this journal (which I also use myself). I'm still waiting to see if he'll actually use it.  Either way, keeping track of your workouts is essential for tracking your progress and making sure you have a detailed plan every time you hit the gym.

If you've ever tried to do a workout when you're hungry, you know how nearly impossible that is.  It's hard enough to workout anyway, but doing it when all you can think about is food makes it even harder.  That's why I love these little mini energy bars.  They're perfect for a quick snack before your workout and you can have one after your workout as well to help your body recover from exercise.
