The Bottom Line

If you're looking for a different kind of workout, this interesting mix of ballet, Pilates and toning may be just right. The workout is an elegant mix of classic ballet moves, Pilates core work and light strength training with a focus on balance, strength and flexibility. The workout is geared towards people over 50, but that doesn't mean this workout is easy or that younger people won't benefit. If you don't like ballet, this may not be a great choice. But you don't have to be familiar with ballet to enjoy this routine.

Guide Review - Attitude Ballet & Pilates Fusion

This workout, led by Bernadette Giorgi, offers a mix of ballet, toning and Pilates for an interesting, well-rounded workout. The workout begins with a short warm up followed by classic ballet moves such as arabesques and relevés. There is lovely classical music and the moves flow well from one to another. This section moves quickly and it can be tough coordinating the arm movements with leg movements at times. Also, a number of exercises have you standing on one leg. So newbies may want to use a chair for balance and review the form pointers provided on the DVD.

What's nice about this section is that you work on things like good posture and balance in a fluid, gentle way, yet it's still challenging.

In the second segment, you add light weights for exercises like squats with presses and lunges with triceps presses. These dynamic exercises work the entire body and the weight is light, which may appeal to beginners.

The Pilates exercises in the last section really challenge the abs with moves like modified 100s, crunches and rolldowns. This section is surprisingly tough and great work for the core. Some moves may be a bit too intense, but she does offer some modifications. The workout ends with a stretch for a 40-minute routine.

Pros

This workout offers great variety, working on many of the issues seniors need help with -- balance, strength and flexibility. It's easy on the joints and the soothing music and instruction make the workout appealing and enjoyable. The DVD also includes premixes if you want shorter or longer workouts.

Cons

If you have flexibility or balance issues, you may have trouble with some of the foot positions and exercises. The workout moves quickly and, if you're not familiar with ballet, you may feel a little clumsy. She does encourage you to take it slow and do what you can.
