The Bottom Line

If you avoid exercise videos like the plague because you think you lack the coordination to follow the moves, Total Body Cardio may be the answer. This dance aerobics workout is perfect for people who want to exercise and have fun, but tend to have two left feet when it comes to learning choreography. The workout is a mixture of simple dance moves, all done to fun, high energy music. There are no combinations to learn -- you do a move, repeat it several times and then move on. This DVD is great for all levels of fitness, but would probably appeal most to beginners.
Pros
  • An easy-to-learn aerobic routine perfect for people with two left feet
  • Great music and easy moves make this a fun workout
  • You repeat the moves numerous times so you have time to perfect them
  • It's easy to make the workout more or less intense to fit your fitness level
Cons
  • Workout may be a little too repetitive for more advanced exercisers

Guide Review - Total Body Cardio

The Instructor. Kenn Kihiu leads this workout and may be the happiest fitness instructor I've ever seen. He has a blinding smile and is obviously having so much fun, it's hard not to have fun yourself. He doesn't do much cueing, but tends to shout out the dance moves without any explanation. Luckily, the moves are simple and don't require much guidance. The background exercisers show some modifications and one of the exercisers, Sharon Money Twombly, is a well-known video fitness instructor herself.

The Workout. This 45-minute workout routine includes a warm-up followed by a series of short aerobic segments, each of which includes a different dance move to a different song. But don't let the word "dance" scare you. The moves Kenn does are very simple to learn and he repeats them enough that you have plenty of time to practice them. Some of the moves include:

  • The twist
  • Salsa
  • Hula-hoop hips
  • Knee ups
  • Arm waves and hip shakes
  • Washing machine and light bulbs (this is one of my favorites)
The music is the best part and includes a huge variety of styles, from hip hop to old classics. Each segment lasts about 1-3 minutes and most moves are low impact, although there are a few jumps. It's easy to keep the moves low if you're a beginner or add intensity with jumps if you're more advanced. Some of the moves do get tough, like a pony step that has you bouncing from foot to foot for what seems like a long time.

The DVD. The DVD is divided into chapters so you can do the entire workout or pick and choose by dance/song. Also included are an 8-minute abdominal workout, a motivational segment and nutrition tips offering some basic advice.

The Bottom Line. This is an excellent workout for beginners or for anyone looking for a low-moderate intensity routine with simple moves and great music. Advanced exercisers may find it too repetitive.
