Get Your Mind Ready

The most important step to getting back to a routine after time off is to make sure your mind is in a good place. Too often we try to jump back into the routine we used to follow to make up for lost time. The problem with that approach is that your body needs more time to remember how to exercise. Do too much too soon and you risk injury, burnout and a lot of post-exercise soreness.

It's natural to want to do everything at once...after all, you don't want to waste any time, right? But allowing your body and mind the time they need to get back into the routine will actually payoff in the long run. Use these resources to get your mind ready:

  • Is Your Mind Ready for Exercise? This quiz poses some important questions you may need to answer to figure out if you're ready to commit to exercise.
  • What's Your Fitness Level? This quiz helps you determine where you are and where to start with exercise.
  • Are You Ready to Make a Lifestyle Change? Many of us start an exercise program out of desperation, hoping to hurry up and see results quickly. But, permanent change often comes from making small changes everyday rather than changing everything overnight. This article discusses what lifestyle changes actually mean and this quiz helps you figure out how ready you are to make those changes.
  • Enjoying Exercise and Healthy Eating. While many of us turn to exercise just to lose some weight, it's easy to forget that taking care of your body can actually feel good. Reminding yourself of all the good things in store for you may help motivate you to get started and stay on track.
  • Getting Back on Track with Exercise. This article discusses a step-by-step approach to getting back to exercise if you've fallen off the wagon. Pay close attention to the first four steps, which emphasize easing back into your workouts and forgiving yourself for getting off track.
