Why I became a personal trainer

I enjoyed coaching my sons sports teams so I thought I could be a good trainer. I wanted do my part for the growing obesity problem even if its only getting one kid or adult to move more and get stronger and learn to live healthier.

What I did to get certified as a personal trainer

Working at a YMCA gets you into their training program. I picked the American College of Sports Medicine because they are considered the old standard. I study for about 1 year and took a 3 day workshop before I took my 150 question ACSM exam.

How I become a personal trainer

I was a stay at home dad looking for a part time job while my two boys were in school. I found the best place to work for me was at my local YMCA. after getting my first training the more I learned the more I wanted to learn.

Lessons learned

  • Find your passion
  • Pick something you enjoy doing
  • Don't worry how it pays it will work itself out in the end
  • Be compassionate and caring, about 1/3 of our population hasn't even been for much of a walk
  • Be honest especially with yourself
  • Try to practice what you preach
  • Stick with it
  • Keep learning, don't be afraid to try new things
  • Don't be afraid to ask questions
  • Keep listening, you'll be surprised what people have to say
