Why I Like Interval Training
For runners, it builds speed and endurance. Plus it offers a change of routine versus your "usual" workout - Speed by training the muscles to perform at a high level for short bursts and endurance by training the body to keep going even after the 8th or 10th set, even when your leg muscles are screaming "no more."
My Favorite Interval Training Workout
(1) YASSOs - 10 sets of 800 fast / 400 jog. Intensity should remain the same throughout each 800.
(2) Mile Repeats - Warm up 1 mile, then do 1 mile @ 5k speed followed by 1/2 mile jog. Repeat 1 mi / 1/2 mi set 4 to 6 times.
Tips and Tricks
- Only do 2 or 3 high intensity running workouts per week and definitely do easy workout days. If you push it & push it too much, it will only lead to injury. You recover on the rest days.
