Do Elliptical Trainers Help You Lose Weight?

Tuesday October 7, 2003
One forum member wants to know: "I'm looking into buying an elliptical trainer and wanted to know if anyone has lost weight using it or knows anybody who's lost weight using it?" You probably know that any activity will do the job, as long as you work at it. Find out what everyone has to say about elliptical trainers.

I have just purchased a Precor Elliptical Trainer. I have selected the ‘weight loss’ program. At 140 lbs, it is preset to a resistance of 4 and ramp level intervals of 4 and 7 for a total workout of 33 minutes (including cool down). If I do this daily, how long should it take for me to see results?

I STARTED WORKING OUT AT OUR LOCAL GYM 3/27 I WAS AT 162 NOW ONE MONTH LATER I’M AT ABOUT 150 I WORK OUT ON THE ELLIPTICAL FOR 1 HOUR AND THEN ANOTHER 5 MINUTES FOR THE COOL DOWN MODE. I ALSO DO IT FOR 10 MINUTES BACKWORDS AND 5 MIN COOL DOWN MODE I ALSO DO NOT EAT MUCH, I HAVE A BANANA BEFORE GOING AND ONE AFTER I AM FINISHED AND FOR SUPER I EAT A TURKEY SANDWICH ON THE NEW BAGEL BREAD WITH SPINICH LEAFS AND STEAMED VEGGIES THATS ALL I EAT DAILY. ALTHOUGH I DO WORKOUT LIKE THIS 6 DAYS A WEEK

(5) Cindy says:

I bought an elliptical about a month ago and have been diligently using 4-6 times a week, usually 40-60 minutes each time. The pointer on the scale has yet to budge for me, and I am at the exact same weight I was a month ago. BUT, I see a real improvement in the mirror. Everything seems a bit more toned, and in general I look more hour-glassy. And of course my fitness level has really improved in a month — I can go faster and longer on the elliptical than I could when I started. All that being said, I am still a bit disappointed that no actual pounds are coming off, but I suspect I’m growing muscle which is countering the fat loss. Either way, I love my elliptical and am really optimistic about it!

Hey guys I am a 21 year old male that uses an elliptical 5 days a week for an hour a day. Ive been doing this for a few months and have went from 260 to about 230 lbs. To you guys that are having trouble, I would say just to monitor your diet better and your calorie intake. Record all the foods your eating in a day and figure out the calories for each. You would be suprised by how many calories are in some foods.

(7) Julia says:

For all of you that think exercising on an ellipitical for a couple weeks and eating healthy means you will just drop weight, that’s wrong!!! It takes six weeks to build muscle and two weeks to lose it. I have been using an ellipitcal now for over two months and I have lost 15 pounds so far by monitoring my food and keeping my calories down to 1500 a day if I can. The healthy way to lose weight is to lose like 2 to 3 pounds a week. Anymore than that and you will most likely gain it back before you even know it. So I suggest to all of you who want results fast, keep dreaming. You just have to watch your diet, exercise your little rear off, and don’t get discouraged. Getting into shape is a life changing thing, you change your whole life style by dieting and exercising. So just keep eating healthy and exercising and you should be fine.

For those who are feeling down cause no kg’s or pounds are going away, please remember doing your measurements via a scale is wrong! Please use Tape to measure cm/mm/inches instead to see real results. Fat will burn and muscle will build, so your weight will fluctuate :) Hang in there!

I have been using an elliptical trainer for 5-6 weeks Now. I feel better I have better stamina than I had like 4 weeks ago. I haven’t seen a any change in my looks but internally I can walk/run longer. My clothes fit a little better. Lost about 9-10 lbs. So I guess you need to give it some time to see results VISUALLY..

(10) spahennakey jackson says:

look you fools, when you first start on an eleptical trainer, you actuaslly build muscle for the first few months on your legs, the higher the endurance level you chose the more muascle you will build..youre burning a ton of calories and building muscle to a certain extent what more can you ask for, just take the sh*t youre eating out of the menu look at sh*t food as making you obese

(11) Jeanette May says:

I have an elliptical and love it, yes it does take longer to do it with just the trainer but it is for building stamina and toning. If you are looking to lose weight, you do have to monitor your food intake but add another cardio, like interval walking, or lifting weights. For me, I always lose inches first before the weight, so it takes patience and commitment. Good Luck!

July 25, 2007 at 3:37 pm
(12) Laura says:

Weight Watchers is a wonderful diet and the elliptical is a godsend! Stop worrying about what the scale reads… pay attention to how you feel, how your clothes feel on you, and the inches you are loosing. These three things are a lot better than a number on a scale! If you are loosing weight, then you should only loose up to 2 lbs a week. There is not a quick fix to loose weight… it is a lifestyle change.

(13) Scott S. says:

Hi all,
Hope everyone’s workout and diets are going well. I am a 28 yr old male and for the last month and a half I have been doing the following: As far as food is concerned I have a bowl of cereal (healthy cereal) and a piece of wheat toast for breakfast. Along with that I also take a weight smart one a day vitamin. At 10:00 every day I go work out at the local YMCA. I do 30 minutes on the elliptical with the crossramp at 17 and the resistance at 7. I keep my strides per minute between 132-144. On M,W,F,Su I also do a weight training cicuit called Strive. For lunch I have a sandwhich with no mayo on it and for dinner the same thing. That’s all I eat all day. I also drink tons of water all day as well. In 1 month I don’t know how much I have lost because I am staying off the scale but I sure feel better and look better. This diet is working good and it is one I think I can do for life.

(14) Ravinder Maan says:

I have been using the elliptical trainer combined with the stepper for about 8 weeks now. My clothes fit me better and have had friends asking what am I doing to loose all this weight. The fact is I haven’t lost any, if at all I’ve put on about a pound or two. Feeling discouraged that I haven’t lost any weight

September 24, 2007 at 6:26 pm
(15) Mary says:

Stop watching the scale! Instead see how your clothes fit on you. I have a cotton shirt (doesn’t stretch) and a pair of khakis that once upon a time used to fit. I put this on every 2 weeks to see if I can get into it… and slowly but surely it’s beginning to fit better and better.

One word of caution is that though exercise and diet is important, I want to stress that people should not “diet” without consulting a doctor or nutritionist. It’s not about dieting but about making the right lifestyle choices. Do you honestly want to just eat frozen lean cuisine meals or sandwiches every day of your life? What if one day you start eating “normally”, then you’ll gain back all the weight you lost on the so called diet. Start by consuming less fatty foods, foods with high sugar contents and toss out all the junk food lurking in the house. Perhaps take a nutrition course to find out what foods are better for you and what portions you should be eating.

If your calorie intake is too low, your metabolism will slow down, and you could easily do more damage than good in the long run. As for how many calories one person can consume per day… it’s different for everyone. Some comments above list what they are eating or the max. calorie count they are consuming, but keep in mind that this is different based on age, gender, height and physical activity. Again, please consult your doctor or nutritionist before beginning any exercise or diets. One final note… not all personal trainers are qualified to tell you what you should or should not eat!

Someone please explain this to me..I’m 27 years old 5′4 and started at a weight of 126..I decided to start going to the gym and start eating healthier foods..I was only drinking water and eating whole grain foods lots of fresh veggies and skinless chicken ..also hitting the gym around 4 times a week…IN A MONTH I GAINED 8 POUNDS!!!!! I STOPPED DRINKING SO MUCH WATER AND GOING TO THE GYM ..I’M BACK DOWN TO 130..SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME..WHY??????

October 15, 2007 at 11:26 am
(17) Brian says:

Amanda,
I have a background in sports nutrition but am not certified yet. There are a things that others have commented on that are happening.

People say to drink lots of water. That’s okay, but in reality, the foods we eat, even cheese, contain water. If you eat fruits and vegetables, you probably get adequate amounts of water. Too much water and you store it in your body or pee it out. As far as whole grain foods…sometimes we think that just because it’s whole grain, it’s better so we eat more of it. Those carbs have to be stored somewhere…they are stored in your body. Some veggies are high in sugar content…again, too much and you store it in your body.
As far as hitting the gym 4 times a week. Just hitting the gym isn’t enough. You’re workouts have to be the right kind with a mix of cardio and strength training.
You need to understand that when you diet, you’re body will resist for a while, maybe a few months, because it thinks you are starving.
Trick your body by eating more frequent meals (6 per day) with smaller portions of healthy foods. Go without carbs for a couple of weeks to get rid of cravings and then ease them back in. Keep portion sizes moderate. Thanks to McD’s, we have to have super-sized meals. We don’t need much to survive.
The weight you gained was probably muscle and you lost that again.
Focus on how you look, how your clothes fit, how you feel and quit looking at the scales.
I,too, battle the weight. I am a 5′5″ male. Two weeks ago I weighed in at 188. I bought a Horizon Elliptical and am doing what I described above. I’ve dropped to 182 (I only know this because the doctor weighed me)and this morning put another notch in my belt. I recommend reading the book “Body for Life”.

(18) Amanda says:

Thanks for the advice…it all just seems so frustrating!! I noticed in the past few months..even though I’m not eating or doing anything differently that I’m slowly gaining more and more weight..I guess life is finally catching up with me..but when I do decide to make a change and really dedicate myself to it that the results were just not what I was expecting..last time I was doing cardo for 30 mins and then weights for 30 also I was still putting on the weight..I guess this time I should just do all cardio till I drop a few then start with the weights?? I should probably get myself a personal trainer!!!Ha Ha

(19) Greg says:

Some of the advice in here is really scary! There is so much information out there, some of it current some of it out dated. I have seen much of the out dated advice given here as the gospel.

Here is an effort to reienforce some of the good points.

1. A scale by itself is a terrible tool to measure progress. A normal scale doesn’t know the difference between fat, muscle, bone, or water. Consider investing in a Tanita body composition scale. It will provide information on weight, % body fat, hydration levels, and bone mass. Also, a tape measure is another good tool!

2. If you haven’t exercised for quite awhile your might gain weight (muscle) when you first start. Muscle is good, it burns calories. It is okay for your lean mass (muscle) to increase. Don’t worry you won’t become a mass of muscle from following a smart nutrition and exercise plan. Bodybuilders follow exceptional excercise and nutrition plans to look like that.

3. Bill Phillips “Body for Life” and “Eating for Life” are great resources to learn about exercise and nutrition. Also consider using the “Body for Life Success Journal” to increase your chances of success. Be sure to check out the success story on Day 4, she accomplished something amazing!

4. If your calorie intake is to low you are sabotaging yourself.

Find your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate), there are plenty of online caluators. Multiply your BMR by your activity level, don’t count your workouts as an activity yet. Add your daily average amount of calories expended working out. Finally, subtract 300 to 600 from that. You now have a daily calorie target for reasonable weight loss. I know it sounds complicated, once again there is information online to help you with this.

5. Keep educating yourself, keep working out. And most importantly Keep motivated! The human mind is capable of producing the most amazing results.

(20) Alana Chandler says:

Yes some advice is scary. Eating healthy foods doesn’t always mean they are low in calories or fat either. Avacados, for example, are quite fattening even though they are a veggie!

Here is the easiest medical tool to help everyone: a pound is equal to 3,500 calories. To lose 1 lb. you must eat 500 fewer calories a day–or burn 500 calories more than you normally would per day. If you do both–equalling 1,000 calories a day, you will lose 2 lbs. per week.

The average woman will typically gain 1.5 pounds of muscle per month when they start an exercise program.

Most research has found that those who gain much more are actually eating more without realizing it…for two reasons. Research suggests that in the beginning, exercise increases hunger (thinking the body needs fuel even if it doesn’t due to increased activity and feat/famine), and, secondly, that people justify eating more because they are working out. (”I workout now so I can have this bagel half”…not thinking that it just cancelled out your entire workout)

I suggest investing in a heart rate monitor (I personally recommend Polar…but there are many) which will track exactly YOUR heart rate programmed to your height and weight. AND EXACTLY how many calories you burned–and will tell you to workout harder if you aren’t in your target fat loss zone. I work out HARD on my elliptical and burn about 310 cals in a 40 minute time span. However, I am 5′4″ and weigh 138 lbs. If you are heavier, and work out the same rate I do, you’d burn more. If you weigh the same but don’t get your heart rate up to it’s target zone and keep it up for at least 30 minutes…you won’t receive the same results I do even though we are the same size.

If you invest in a heart rate monitor you’ll find it is FAR more accurate than those on the elliptical…and know exactly how you are doing based on YOUR body readings.

If you eat too little, you will slow your progress.

( I need to eat 1,500 cals a day for ultimate success. I don’t see weight loss if I indulge.)

6 small meals are ideal.

Muscle gain helps you burn more calories at rest and during sleep than you would otherwise…so it’s important. Too little food, and you’ll burn muscle.

A good rule of thumb for lowfat foods (equally important) that’s easy to remember is 3 grams of fat per every 100 calories. (and check number of servings on all nutritional info…one box or can doesn’t mean one serving always!)

The elliptical IS BOTH strength training AND cardio. It is the ONLY really good machine that is…and it is the only one that works every muscle in your bod if you use it aptly. So it should be your very best bet, based on all current research (and I study study study all current expert research) for weight loss and toning. This is IF you are working out at your target rate. (you can find out more about target heart rates online)

You actually should try to reach for 5 workouts at anywhere from 40-60 minutes per day per week. Current opinion shows that you can gain the same benefit from 2 20-minute workouts per day (breaking it up)–and some say even have a better advantage to your metabolism in doing so.

My training on my heart rate monitor (which has been perfect) has my plan at 5 workouts burning a total of just over 1,500 calories at 3.05 hours per week. I meet this goal every week and have great results.

Make sure you are working up a REAL sweat, keeping your heart rate up in your target zone, and limiting your calories. It’s not magic..it is science. You HAVE to lose.

Finally, limit your salt…you’ll retain water, among other things…and drink, drink, drink water…it increases your metabolism and fuels your muscles to work harder. Keep water ON your elliptical. It’s really difficult to drink too MUCH water. It’s really really easy to drink too little!

(Also, make sure your stride is set for your body on your elliptical. a stride of 22 is typically ideal for someone under 5′5″)

I love my SportsArt elliptical! Good Luck on yours–whatever it may be–hang in there!

I am 21 and I had a heel injury in both my heels about two years ago. I am still recovering from the injury. I am using customised insoles and shoes to recover. Because of this, I have not been able to exercise or use machines like treadmill. Because of that I have gained some weight. I have been using my exercise bike to lose weight but to no avail. I am thinking of using an elliptical trainer, but I am not sure whether it will be of any impact to my heel. If it is a low impact machine, then I will be able to use elliptical machine to exercise, lose weight and feel better. Could anyone advise me whether I can use the elliptical machine while I am still recovering from a heelpad injury. Thanks.

I have been working out on the elliptical 5-6 days a week for 30-40 minutes a day (incl. cool down). I have also been doing occasional crunches and have been doing a 20 minute weight/exercise video about 3 times a week. I am eating Lean Cuisines and drinking slim fast and completely watching portions and fat. After 6 weeks I have only lost 5 lbs but I have seen a small improvement. It was discouraging not to have the instant change but the key is to stick with it no matter what the scale tells you. Because no matter what it says, you’re better off than you would be if you gave up and went to McDonalds!

I have been using the elliptical 3-4 times a week at about 30-40 minutes each time. I have been watching my intake (eat egg whites in the morning, you’ll eat less throughout the day). Also, eat a small dinner. I have been doing this for nine days and have already lost 78lbs! Just cut back on portions and you’ll start to see results.

(27) Jenn says:

I’ve been working out with the pre-set weightloss course on the elliptical at my University gym. I do 30-40 minutes and try to stay within a range of 150-170 strides per minute. After my cardio on the elliptical, I do about 20 minutes of free weights. I do this just about everyday, but I don’t hate myself if I can’t find the time…definitely 5-6 times per week. I am about 5′6 and 175lbs, but I didn’t really start doing this for weightloss as much as toning and feeling better. Both of those goals are being realized after three weeks. I am DEFINITELY toning and my clothes fit much better, my skin is brighter and my face is thinner. I have to admit, I am becoming addicted to the way I feel working out on the elliptical and eating fresh, whole foods. Which personally, I believe is better than being addicted to wings and beer! Like I said, I’m not necessarily watching the pounds, but I’ve lost about 4 after three weeks. This seems really moderate and healthy to me, so I’ve set a goal of 40lbs in one year. I am totally convinced that the only way to get in shape or lose weight is by gradually settling into these lifestyle changes!!! Thank God for the elliptical!

(28) Maria says:

I use the eliptical trainer an hour every day, I burn 779 calories per work out on cross trainer setting at level 8, which equals 11,500 steps. I’m a figure/bodybuilding gal. If you only perform cardio, it takes your body 20-25 minutes to get into fat burning mode, so it’s essential to do a 45-60 minute cardio session. If you’re only doing 20 minutes you haven’t achieved fat burning mode. If you want to change the way your body looks, weight training is the only way you will achieve this. Endless cardio never changes anything and your body will platue after 12 weeks. Muscle weighs more than fat, stay off the scale and measure yourself(arm, thigh, calve, waist, hips) every week, or have your body fat checked to verify your goals. Drink at least half your body weight in water and make a 500 calorie deficit from your regular caloric intake. It took a long time to put weight on, it takes disipline and healthy habits to slim down,(no more excuses). Have fun while working out, change things up like jumping rope and doing push ups, going outside for cardio. It’s not a death sentence it’s a mood stabilizer and its good for you, enjoy.

(29) Cat says:

The investment in an eliptical was the best money I’ve ever spent! I recently started using it along with Weight Watchers (counting points). At first I wasn’t seeing any progress. All of a sudden the scale started moving. A physical therapist told me that the muscles I was building in the beginning were starting to pay off and helping me lose weight. I’m also eating the right amount of food — not starving myself to lose it quicker! I’m in my early 50’s, 5′4″ and 160 lbs. I walk for 30 minutes on the treadmill, do 25 minutes on the eliptical and another 15-30 minutes on a bike (all in my home gym). A recent shoulder injury has me sidelined from lifting weights). I try to do this routine 6 days a week over the course of the day (not all together). I’m now only 10 lbs away from my healthy goal. I wouldn’t trade this eliptical for anything!

(30) AC says:

Speaking from personal experience, it is NOT a good idea to lose weight purely through calorie reduction and cardio, you really should also do weights 3 days a week, and exercise all your muscle groups. I did mostly cardio, lost about 70 lbs in 5 months, but my metabolism got killed and I’ve been fighting to keep it off ever since. If I had to do it all over again I would have done a lot more weightlifting.

Losing weight on an Elliptical? Probably depends on how long you do it…I bought a Lifefitness that has 20 levels and use for 1 hour daily at level 18-17 and haven’t seen any results…been eating several times a day like they recommend and no junk food at all.
I’m starting to think it’s more of a myth; you do sweat pretty good though. The only way I could lose weight was riding a bicycle for aprox 100 miles on the weekends and about 50 miles total on the weekdays but I don’t have that kind of time now and at 300 lbs I may flatten the tires LOL…Good luck in your quest as I know it can be totally frustrating.

I have been going to the gym for the last 8 weeks and have found that I most enjoy the ellipitical.

I go 5x a week and my work out is 62 minutes (the last 2 minutes as a cool down). I have not noticed weight loss as of yet but don’t expect to.

It is a process.

What is most important is how I feel… and I feel AMAZING. My clothes are slowly starting to fit better but really – I don’t expect to see results for another couple of months.

You have to gain muscle to burn the fat faster. Duh. It takes time.

Anyone expecting to have overnight results needs a reality check. Instant Gratification is for suckers.

Hello

I just bought an ellipitical about three weeks ago and it was the best choice I have ever made! I have been biking to and from work for about six months now and seen some results in my legs, but still not enough. Adding the ellipitical has really made me feel better and more positive. I set it up so I can use it in front of the tv or in the sun room, either way it is sooooo easy to hop on it every morning and excercise for 40 minutes. After this I shower, get ready and head to work(on my bike for 25 minutes). I feel better, look better and can,t wait to see this difference two more months will make..Cheers..Burgash

I was told that just because you go fast and for a long period of time on this machine you will not see results, you have to make sure your targeted heart rate is at what it should be..mine is supposed to be 117, and that is what I keep it at and I can already see results and I just started 2 weeks ago..

(39) nat says:

I lost 45lbs by working out 5 days a week, eating cereal for breakfast, small fruit snacks during the day, tuna salad for dinner. Before the gym I’d get a nutritional shake. I did spin classes twice a week and the rest of the week I did the elliptical trainer for 10mins, then light circut weights at a high repitition for different areas of the body (depending on the day) arms, chest ect…then back on the elliptical for another 20-25mins with intervals of resistance. Also, I reccommend keeping your heart rate at a cardio level and make sure you’re sweating and pushing yourself to a safe area.
I also carried a 2L bottle of water with me to the gym that I would finish off twice, once while at the gym and once after.
If you are just starting to get into shape don’t push too hard or you’ll not want to continue. I started with 10mins cardio on elliptical and built up to 30mins in the same week.
hope this helps.

I have been using my elliptiacl for about 8 months now, and I have lost 45 pounds!!!.
I eat very healthy. I eat about 7 times a day, all small amounts….and mainly healthy foods. I drink lots of water and no carbonated driks at all. I go on my elliptical about 5-6 times a weeks for 30 minutes at a time. I love the elliptical!!!
It really does work!!! If you combine good eating habits and a 15-20 minutes of excersize daily, you will surely lose weight!!!
Good luck!!! If you have any other questions, I’d be happy to help!!!

People,
Treadmills, elliptical, bikes etc. they all work, but it is all about the combination of exercise (cardio and resistance training), good eating habits (not dieting) and meal frequency. Eating one or two bananas, a bagel and an orange during a whole day is a capital sin, your body requires much more than that, if that is all you are eating and is working out for you, then great, but it won’t be long before you go to a halt due to being undernourished. With my busy work schedule I workout six times a week, and for cardio all I use is an elliptical. I am 5′10″ and weight 195 lbs an manage to keep my body fat at 7% by using an elliptical machine. As long as you train with high intensity you should be good (for me 75% to 85% of my EMHR) that is 150 to 165 BPM. For those of you that are looking for nutritional and exercise education or knowledge, I recommend Tom Venuto’s Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle e-book. I have been following his guidelines and motivational literature and I went from 218 lbs at 19% body fat to 195 at 7% body fat. If think I am lying contact me at my e-mail rafael0225@hotmail.com and I will be happy to tell you about it.

I just purchased an eliptical machine. I read all the comments about people exercising on the eliptical for 30min-1 hour. How????? I can barely make it 15 min and I have to take several breaks. I have been exercising for about 3 months now. I have the pilates machine, I do floor pilates, I walk the treadmill, I do light strength training and have been riding a stationary bike. I also suffer from fibromyalgia, but I have conquered these other exercises and am feeling better. Why can I not conquer this eliptical?

I just bought an elliptical too. I have not really exercised in years and so am starting slowly. I am following a 12 week schedule designed for beginning walkers at thewalkingsite.com/12week.html. I am splitting the daily walks into 2 equal periods on the elliptical. I am using a chest strap heart rate monitor to ensure that I make the most of my workouts. After only a week and a half, it’s too early to see any changes in my body, but I do feel better and stronger. I will slowly be building up to two 20 minute sessions per day, 6 days per week. For me, I find it beneficial to write my goals down and track my progress. You can download a printable weekly walking log at walking.about.com/library/cal/weeklycal.pdf.
