In the Forum - Not into the gym anymore

Tuesday June 6, 2006
One forum member posted an interesting thought at the forum: "I am just not into the gym anymore right now. I go through these phases in life. As a kid, it was always swimming, swimming, swimming. As a teen, it was sports. As a later teen and young adult it was weight lifting (which I loved intensely). Now, it's walking. I am addicted to it."

This is an interesting topic because I think, too often, we get stuck in workout ruts without realizing how bored we are. Rather than move on to something new and different, many of us end up quitting thinking there's something wrong with us instead of with our workouts.

Change is inevitable and, when it comes to exercise, you may find that as you get older, your ideas about exercise change as well...do you allow those changes to happen or do you fight them, staying with the same old workouts because you're not sure what to do? Come join the discussion and tell us how your workouts and views on exercise have evolved over the years.

I attempt to exercise every day of some type which over the years has boiled down to yoga, weight lifting and walking with crunches and stretches thrown in and using the treadmill on rainy days.

I’m totally not into the gym anymore either. I actually just discontinued
my contract yesterday. It seems to
take way too much time & effort just
trying to get there whereas at home I
can just pop in an exercise video and workout so much quicker & easier. Or even just go for a quick walk.

I used to go to the gym years ago and then that just got to be too time consuming and too much money. Let’s be honest…the cost of membership can add up. So I eventually started buying my own exercise equipment. Nothing huge, please…I live in a 2 bedroom apartment. I did this because I knew that one day, I would have children and when would I be able to go to the gym? My ideas toward exercise have changed and so have my motivations. I got bored with my workouts which were primarily weight conditioning and the treadmill. Although I still do weight conditioning, I ditched the treadmill which bored me out of my mind. If it is raining, I just wear water repellent jogging outfit. I have also started doing any sort of physical activity with my nine year old daughter. I thought to myself,”Wow, she always has fun running around, jumping rope, roller-blading, etc. Why shouldn’t I have fun exercising too?”

What is really cool is that by doing all those fun activities, I get to spend quality time with my incredible daughter

I usually join a gym every other year or two. While there, I love the classes and weight lifting, but I crave variety and get bored after a handful of months. Tennis, walking, and toning exercises are easy to do without paying for a membership and it keeps variety in the workout. When I’m bored with something, I won’t do it, so I need to be sure that I can change things up periodically. I also agree whole-heartedly about being able to just workout when you have time at home instead of having to plan a trip to the gym.

I just got back into a new gym after taking a year long hiatus. Ive gone thru the same cycle since high school. I’ll go every day several times a day for maybe a year or longer, but at some point I just get burnt out and quit altogether.
I love working out and love seeing my body change, so this time I’m trying to pace myself. I Do a variety of different classes, some that I’ve never tried before. and some days i just won’t go even if I want to, I figure if I pace it and keep it nice and easy I’ll always look forward to it and won’t think of it as a chore, dragging myself to the gym and putting in half the effort while I’m there. So far it works. I still get 6-7 hours of gym a week, and i don’t feel burnt out. I keep my routine as un-routine as possible and try to do something different each week.

Have you gained weight because you have stopped weight training?
