Exercise for Back Pain

Thursday September 7, 2006
This week's new article Exercise for Back Pain, was inspired by a combination of events. First, two of my clients showed up for their sessions with aching backs...one from too much sitting, the other from too much exercise. I gently scolded them and took each of them through strengthening and stretching exercises, then promptly hurt my own back by spending the rest of the day sitting in front of my computer without getting up.

Oh the irony. The point is that back pain is so common these days, it's hard to find people who don't experience it...at least occasionally. That's one reason I wrote this latest article, which discusses the different causes of back pain along with specific action plans to deal with them. As a bonus, I've also created two brand new workouts. First is the Seated Stretch for the Neck, Back and Shoulders which is perfect for those of you who sit in front of the computer each day. Second is a very relaxing workout to Strengthen & Stretch the Back. Both workouts are short, simple and should leave you feeling a bit more relaxed.

Do you have back problems? If so, how do you deal with them? If you have any good ideas, post them in comments so the rest of us can benefit.

first exercise at a very ridiculous mininal if you are in pain,,,the first exercise should be a very simple but effective exercise,,,,,this would be when you would walk backwards….yes you are exercising some muscles that do not get exercised very often,,,next find some steps ,,,back up to the steps …lift one leg drag the other up to that same stairstep ,,,next lift the leg and drag the other ….again …again ..again……next stand ‘’side-ways” on the steps …lit one leg ,,,drag the other….again,,,,again…again….next exercise turn around and do the same process with the other leg…BEWARE…DO NOT OVER DO IT ….DO THESE EXERCISES 2 OR 3 TIMES PER DAY…..A FEW REPS AT A TIME…BUT KEEP COUNT AND INCREASE REPS ….SLOWELY……..

I wanted to say thank you for those great workouts for the neck and back. I sit at a computer all day long and don’t always have the chance to get up so those stretching exercises are great!

Thank you!

I have an extra lumbar vertabrae (L6 instead of an S1) as well as arthritis in my lower back. These are the same exercises my Dr. and P.T. prescribed for me and very simply THEY WORK!

If you have a specific problem (such as a herniated disc) you definitely want to talk to your doctor and/or physical therapist about the exercises you can do before trying anything on your own.

I find that simple yoga and pilates workouts really help when my back is feeling sore. The stretching and strengthening that both offer are key. I also sit on my stability ball whenever my back feels especially tight. I’m not sure why, but after about 5-10 minutes, it seems that the tension has gone away.

Good comments on exercise as way to lessen back pain. I do my exercises every day, and I have some of the best exercises explained on my blog so that they will be easier for people to do.

After 20 years, my back pain, resulting from 2 rear end car accidents are gone. The HMSO said my bone structure was good but my back muscles were weak and needed strengthening through excercise, which did not help.

A chiropractor aligned my spine and amazingly, the morning after the first treatment, I could lift my right leg while in bed and the 20+ year old pain was gone.

My HMSO now copays for my treatment which decreased from 2x a week to 1x every other month.

I’ll have to look at those exercises. After an accident on a building site, I had to sleep on a mattress on the floor for weeks. It sort of cleared up, but now and again,I suffer a severe twinge, where it seems to lock for a couple of hours. As I live in a rural area, the doc has never managed to get there in time to see for himself what exactly seems to be causing it. Once I can manage into a hot bath, it certainly seems to help.
