Vote in This Week's Poll: Which behavior do you think is the most important for maintaining a healthy diet?

Monday March 26, 2007
Most of us have a few tricks up our sleeves when it comes to eating healthy. For me, keeping tempting things like chips and sweets out of the house helps and so does having a family member or friend nearby to talk you down from a vicious chocolate craving. It's much harder to cram old Halloween candy down my throat when my husband is holding up an apple and saying, "Don't you think this would make you happier?" I suppose that depends on your definition of happiness, doesn't it?

The point is, there are some behaviors that help us eat healthy and many of us even follow some of these behaviors. What about you? What do you do to make sure you get healthy calories without going overboard? Vote in this week's poll and tell us this - if you had to choose just one way to eat healthy and manage your weight, which would be the best one?

Poll: Out of the following, which behavior do you think is the most important for maintaining a healthy diet?

1. Making meals at home and eating out less
2. Keeping a food diary and tracking calories
3. Eating smaller portion sizes
4. Eating more 'good' carbs like whole grains, fruits and vegetables
5. Following a high protein diet
6. Eating regularly throughout the day
7. Other - please explain in comments

Stay away from fast(fat)food. Dont eat when your not hungry. Dont fall for the “you must eat 5 times a day to rev your metabolism” What you think our ancestors did to “rev” their metabolism? What if they could not kill something to eat for a few days? What if they couldnt catch something to eat for a few days? Eating five or six times a day is asking for trouble. The phrase must be sponsored by supermarkets. I think people eat more for comfort than for survival. If you want to lose weight, eat food to survive, not because you have another social event to attend so you can stuff your face and talk about how good you’ve been so so a few extra calories wont hurt. Then you wake up in the morning step on the scale, look in the mirror and feel like crap becasue you attended another social event that revolved around food. When is the last time anyone has went out with their friends without somekind of food outing involved? Theres a whole other subject that I better not get started on. Remember eat to survive, not to feel comfortable, or to socialize. Eating is becoming another addictive disease.

Eat a bite or two for breakfast. It wakes up the metabolism setting the stage for the body to burn calories all day long.

DON’T BRING HOME: unhealthy, fatty, partially-hydrogenated, heavily salted, low-fiber, white flour, minimum protein, unnatural, highly-processed foods FROM THE GROCERY STORE. Leave them there for some other fool.

I think its sad the crap society feeds to people… literally. It sucks that they have fast food places EVERYWHERE. As dumb as this sounds but they should out law them. I dont trust what i read any more about dieting… eating when u are hungry sounds like the best diet u can be on. Also, prob the smartest thing ive heard in a while

Too many calories in and not enough out equals wait gain. Keeping the wait off requires constant effort on my part.
I plan for social outings, business trips and holidays. I adjust accordingly. Juicing (carrot/apple) or eating a bowl of cereal in the morning, or sometimes skipping Breakfast (except for oj and coffee). If I am going somewhere for business, I bring along my walking shoes and find a treadmill. I mentally keep track of what I eat throughout the day, and plan for the future. I sometimes splurge (big time), but I (big time) sacrifice too. Eating the broiled fish, or grilled chicken with vegetables while out at a nice restaurant. I have to exercise, diet, or do both to stay thin. BALANCED LIFE STYLE.

Perhaps not a cure all, but fasting from refined sugar is a no brainer way to jump start some health into your diet!

I keep a food diary and count my calories. Also, getting up and moving. I never eat fast food and NEVER drink Soda. Water is best for you. And always eat breakfast!

I believe in eating when you are hungry, eating smaller portions, and working out regularly. I am not talking about 3 happy meals a day, rather, cereal in the mornings with fruit, crackers and peanut butter between breakfast and lunch, have a sandwhich for lunch, a granola something between lunch and dinner, and dinner…brown rice and vegetables. it is really about how much you are eating, portion size is everything. this time look at the servings on the wrapped food you are eating, and you will be amazed. i call is safe by shopping at trader joe’s, everywhere else, although closer to me, just have a ridiculous amount of unhealthy food. remember to exercise regularly!

Since we are quickly becoming a society who puts a premium on CONVENIENCE…. Simple is everything.
This applies to healthy eating as well.
Here is the problem……. simple usually means FAKE FOOD….. quick….easy…..but no nutrition. Then…we have our bodies screaming for nutrition…..so we fill it with more FAKE FOOD! Bam….the cycle has started.
Check out more at www.suspensiongel.org and check out suspension gel. They are getting ready to release a ‘Fitness Meal’ which is convenient and easy……and good for you. Although information about the fitness meal is not listed on the web site…. you can get an idea of how it will be delivered by looking at the other products offered. SIMPLE + NUTRITIONAL = HEALTHY AMERICANS! Peace!

I think the best way is to eat food that makes you happy, just eat a little of it, perhaps 1 or 2 servings. For example eating Mac & chees, eat 1/2 of what you normally eat. I don’t think most diets work, instead it makes you gain more weight, beause you eat less for ex. breakfast but have a big lunch which makes it worse. if you want good abs or lose weight i say eat food that makes you happy but less of it and add more healthy (grain, ceral) food, do 30-40 minute of excersing every day and about 200 (or more) crunches every day. Do this for about 1 or 2 month and i garantee you WILL lose a lot of weight. My mom tryed it she was 190lbs after 18 weeks or less she was 160lbs. She was amazed because she did it all by herself, w/o spending too much on a trainer, or going on a complete diet, although she had less sweets and more water instead. Try it and see if it works and i guarantee 100%

Don’t cheat now, there’s no “all of the above” option! ;)

I picked #4–”good carbs.” White bread and other junk carbs don’t contribute much but calories to your diet. Whole grains have decent amounts of protein as well as lots of fiber. Replacing the bad with the good isn’t much of a chore.

Fruit and vegetables, that’s kind of a no-brainer.
