Dance Fever

Friday November 9, 2007
A couple of weeks ago, my neighbor's kids set up a lemonade stand to save up money for a Wii. They were only charging 5 cents a cup, so I imagine they would have to keep that lemonade stand open for the next couple of years to get enough dough...but I admire their perseverance. What's interesting about Wii and, specifically, Dance Dance Revolution (DDR), is that it's a great workout and just one way we may be able to help kids fight obesity.

Researchers at the University of Wisconsin actually did a study to find out if DDR really is an effective workout. They found that the average calorie burn was 5.9 per minute for the light mode, 7.7 calories per minute for the standard mode and 9.4 calories per minute for the difficult mode. They also found that both kids and adults had a lot of fun participating. Some schools are even making DDR part of their curriculum.

It's great to see people thinking of creative ways to stay active and dancing is a great choice, whether it's DDR or ballroom dancing. In fact, there are tons of great dancing videos out there for the home exerciser or for people too embarrassed to dance in public (like me). Check out Collage Video's list of dance exercise videos for ideas and leave a comment if you enjoy getting your groove on.

We are big fans of DDR, Eyetoy games, and Wii. The whole family has a great time playing, and we burn calories at the same time. It is really a fun way to exercise.

My son bought the wwi for themselves. But my husband uses it more. He was a couch potatoe to the max. Now friends had to come over to see why he likes to talk about it so much. Even runs home to play it.
