Reader Success Story-How Evelyn Learned to Love Exercise

By , About.com GuideOctober 21, 2010

Follow me on:

Evelyn wasn't exactly an exercise-hater but, as she says, she "had a million reasons not to do it," a situation that left her 50 years old and an uncomfortable 156 pounds.

Evelyn finally found more reasons to exercise when she looked at a picture of herself and some friends and saw "my pretty big round face" in every picture. She suddenly found herself playing the Sesame Street game, one of these things is not like the other, and realizing she was the odd person out because of her weight.

Evelyn took that surge of motivation and did two things that jump-started her success: She bought a scale that tracked her weight over time and she loaded up on music to make walking more fun. With those plans in place, Evelyn has not only learned to enjoy exercise, she's lost 25 pounds. Evelyn's story just proves that it really is never too late to enjoy exercise.

Read more of Evelyn's story and share your own if you've got one. Did you go from an exercise hater to an exercise lover? Tell us about it.

I think I learned to love exercise when I started seeing results. It didn’t happen right away and I’ve had many a plateau. I actually gained some weight when I started with strength training, which was really depressing and frustrating. I’ve lost almost 40 pounds and have kept it off for well over a year, fluctuating about 2-3 pounds. I had also kept a journal and re-read my entries a year later. That was inspiring too, to see how I had gotten over the hurdles time after time and motivated myself to keep going. It has really kept me in check with my exercise and my diet.

A Weight Watchers motivational speaker said one day she was complaining about “having” to walk in the morning. A voice from the back said, “I’LL GLADLY TRADE YOU!” The woman in back was in a wheelchair, paralyzed from the waist down from a drunk driver hitting her. That helped her, and me, too, but what really changed my mind was when I helped to care for a man that had a stroke that took out one side of his body. Every day that I can move I’m grateful, but I try to get REAL actions done, not just “exercise”. Gratitude in your attitude helps a bunch!
