If you've already gotten started on (or gotten back to) your workouts, now is a good time to deal with some of the logistics of working out. It seems easy to schedule a workout (everything is easier before you actually have to do it, isn't it?), but when you start thinking about everything you have to do before and after, it can be overwhelming.
That's where planning ahead is crucial. Your workout starts well before you actually do it, something that can throw you off if you're not ready for it. There are 4 basic steps to planning and preparing for your workouts:
- Scheduling - The obvious place to start is when you'll workout and for how long. This should go right in your calendar along with any other appointments.
- Planning - Knowing what you're going to do is critical to your success. There's nothing worse than walking into a gym and doing random exercises, with no real idea of whether you're doing the right thing. It helps to know your workout purpose and to get help (say, from a personal trainer) if you feel lost. More about setting up an exercise program.
- Preparation - This may be the single most important thing you do. An unprepared exerciser is an unmotivated exerciser, so make sure you get everything you need well before your scheduled workout. You might even want to schedule this time in your calendar to ensure you'll do it (e.g., 15 minutes before bed to pack your gym bag).
- Proper Fueling - Another part of preparing is making sure your body is ready. Plan what/when you'll eat and how you'll hydrate before, during and after your workouts. There's nothing worse than being hungry halfway through your workout.
It may seem daunting but, the more you practice, the easier it gets. Many veteran exercisers out there have it down to a science, but they didn't get that way overnight. How hard was it to make it a regular part of your day?
