Why I Like Interval Training

I hit a plateau during the summer and turned to interval training to help me get over it as a recommendation. It worked and I have been using it since.

My Favorite Interval Training Workout

I've only up until now used it on the elliptical machine but am now switching to the treadmill. I start the elliptical at a resistance that I am comfortable with and for 20 minutes I alternate between maximum speed and a fat burning speed every minute. I also increase the resistance by 1 as often as I can after each high intensity minute. Every day I try to do just something a bit more if possible and accept the days I don't. So as an example here is what I do:

Start the elliptical at a resistance of 8 and do that for 5 minutes for warm up going at a speed of 8-9.

Then at the 5 minute mark I go as fast as I can for a minute (usually in the 13 range) and once that minute is up increase the resistance by 1.

At 20 minutes I am usually at a resistance of about 16 or 17 and keeping the same pace. I then do a 5 minute cool down.

Tips and Tricks

  • Every time I hit the gym I always try to work just a bit harder than last time. This could be something like burning more calories on the elliptical in the same time, or 1 higher on the resistance or to lift 5lbs more than the last time. Small increments. Over time it builds up. And the days I may not be able to do it I accept it as one of those sluggish days.
